Brett Yormark said an interesting tidbit in an interview that’s making rounds. He wants to create “Big 12 Mexico” and didn’t really elaborate further.

What could it be? Maybe a game played like the Ireland series? Maybe a push to get Arizona and Sam Diego State?

After OU and UT announced the SEC i quasi joked that we should go after Mexico City and Toronto. I’m not sure how hard it would be to create a P5 caliber team in Mexico, probably extremely hard, but NFL is big in both Canada and Mexico.

Toronto would definitely be easier. I’ve met some rabid Canadian sports fans beyond just hockey.

I think it is brilliant.

We have the greatest concentration of teams that would be natural fits for Mexican fans to root for. Even more if we get an Arizona school or San Diego State.

Mexico Football

If the Big 12 can own the International football fan, we have a chance to leverage international media outlets to get on par with BIG and SEC.

Even if we have to give up a home game to be played in Mexico City or Toronto every once in a while, I’m in.

Are the Canadian and Mexican university systems similar to the American university system? With few exceptions (mostly in the UK), European schools have very little in the way of athletic or social organizations.

Canadian schools are similar to US schools in regards to athletics. Football is a small sport, however, as hockey is king. I don't know about Mexican schools.

This was my thought. You want to grow fan interest and viewership? That's a big demographic (Mexican & Latin American) in Texas and the SW. Many of them probably don't have a rooting interest in college sports yet. Drive some exposure to basketball and football, and see if you can add incremental viewers/fans. That could drive real value and growth.

Big12 is uniquely positioned geographically (and culturally too I think) to capitalize on that.

My guess would be that the Mexican system is pretty similar. This is based upon one experience. I was sitting around a town square in a Mexican college town and a parade went by from the local college. It was very similar to a high school homecoming parade.
