The Rose Bowl was a disappointing end to the season, no doubt.
However, I take issue with your "only beat crappy teams" comment. We did not beat any top ten teams. However, since when is winning in Madison against a 10-3 Badger team a crappy win? They beat the PAC 12 South champ in their bowl. Not saying they are world beaters, but a crappy team.
Northwestern, despite their bowl loss, is not a crappy team. They won 10 games including wins over Stanford (yes that Stanford) and Wisconsin.
Even when you lose like this, it's a fun season. 12-0 is still a heck of an accomplishment even against all those "crappy" teams.
Wisconsin was a nice win for you, even though it took a pretty big break to do it. Nobody can explain a Northwestern win over Stanford except that it was a first game fluke before Stanford put it together. Northwestern was an average team at best as indicated by their 41 Sagarin ranking, and that was before the Tennessee blow-out. The Hawks had a great year with some nice wins, but many of us have been shaking our heads while many hawk fans talked like the team was play-off worthy and a legitimate top 5-10 team. The Rose bowl and bowl results from Northwestern and MSU would indicate Iowa belongs about where Segarin had them- in the low twenty range. Still doesn't take away from all the fun you've had that I sure wish we could have, but hopefully when the hawks have a 10 plus win season again next year, the fans will realize it won't mean much until you prove it against the big boys at the end of the year.
This was probably one of the more logical posts and I have read and agree with most of it.
However, I would disagree that a ten plus season doesn't mean much if you don't win your bowl game (prove it as you say). Ten plus win seasons are still a great accomplishment.For example, you guys have never had a single one (don't play the conference card here). I'm not saying that to throw it in your face, but rather use it as an example of how hard it can be. There were many years where the B12 North was worse than the B10 West was this year and not a single team was ranked to end the year. Yet, only once in my lifetime(I'm 30) have the Clones finished in the top 25 (2000, when you went 9-3). The West, rather you agree or not, will have two and possibly three teams ranked in the final AP top 25. And you can dismiss NW's win over Stanford as a fluke but they won 10 games and beat Stanford and Wisconsin.
I don't think going 12-0 is very easy even with our schedule. Next year, we add Michigan who I think will be a top ten team. Neither ISU or Iowa (we have a better chance) will probably ever win a national title in football, so these types of seasons are still memorable(just like ISU in basketball last year) regardless of the postseason outcome.
we have one really good team. Baylor. The style of play in the Big12 blows, I hate it. I love the Big10, Stanford. As far as style of play goes.
Not gonna disagree with what you've said either. I said the Hawks had a great year with some nice wins, something I wish we could have. Just pointing out that outside of Michigan at home, next year's schedule may be even easier, and not to get too excited over a great record until you prove it against a legitimate top 10 team. I do think MSU earned their ranking but got exposed by Alabama and in hindsight, Iowa. Cook just wasn't the same qb after he injured his shoulder.
I don't think it's that the Big 12 doesn't want to have good D's, TCU had a very good one last year and I still think with Boykin and Doctson they were a top 5 team this year. But I'm not ready to proclaim the death of the up-tempo high octane offenses yet. After OU handled Alabama two years ago the powers that be were considering rules to try to slow down games to limit number of plays. I notice that in most of the big bowl games Osborne, Alvarez and company tried to avoid match-ups between the up tempo and more deliberate old school offenses. We'll see what happens in the national title game. This is a great Alabama team but if the more high octane Clemson team wins convincingly, you might hear more talk about how to slow down the game, which to me would be more sour grapes.
Yea, I will say that I think Nebraska will be much better next year. I know this sounds cliche but they were a really good 6-7 team. They lost numerous games in heartbreaking fashion (which was awesome haha) but as evidenced by their win over a top 25 UCLA team, they were very young and had potential. They return a lot for next year and should be a much better team.
Also, because of the rotational schedules in the BIG, you are right that you can get easy ones. Look at Wisconsin's schedule next year to see what the rotation can do. I could argue that they might have the toughest overall schedule in the country next year with at LSU, Ohio St., at MSU, at Michigan, at Iowa, and Nebraska.
We can agree it was soooo good seeing NU lose those close games, and if Armstrong played well they were pretty good. When he didn't they could be very bad. Wisconsin will have their hands full next year but you have to admit your schedule sets up awfully nice. I agree Michigan will be real good and I don't know if you play them early or late, but they will have a new qb and you have them at home. Penn State replaces their qb and they haven't shown they're back yet. Outside of the possibility of Michigan, you should be favored in every other game on your schedule despite the Rose bowl beating. Not blaming you for the favorable schedule, in fact I'm jealous. We face a lot of up tempo offenses with good dual threat qb's, and if the new staff doesn't shore up our defense it could be another long year. But I have hope with the new staff.
Iowa's schedule wasn't great, theres no way to sugar coat that (doesn't take away from being 12-0, that's still impressive) ,especially the last month of the season. The weird thing about it wasn't that Iowa didn't play any of the top 4 teams from the b1g east, its that either did Wisconsin, heck NW only played one of them. tOSU, Michigan and MSU were just as lucky to not have to play Iowa or Wisky. How does that schedule ever happen and if it does, how does the media not hammer the league for softening everyones schedule? Why was Iowa the only team that got flack for its schedule, the teams in the east should have gotten just as much criticism.
