Shifting away from the political side of this, it's been a clear trend for a while that people want to move to warmer weather and that the economic reasons for living in the Midwest/Steel Belt region have faded. In other words, Big Ten states are going to shrink and Big Ten enrollments are going to drop. (Unfortunately, this also applies to Iowa State.) But college enrollments across the board are going to drop soon as we deal with an enrollment cliff, so every school is going to have to get creative about how to handle that. I think ISU saw it coming, and the cliff will be an excuse to close or demolish some overdue residence halls.
Florida and Texas don't have state income taxes. I'm sure that's a big draw. But again, the people who are moving there are wanting to live where the smart people are.
Smart people? Or rich people? There are tons of smart people who aren’t rich. There are tons of rich people who aren’t smart, but maybe their parents or grandparents were.
Give it another decade of extreme weather and those trends are going to shift, especially when insurance companies stop insuring individuals in persistent hurricane territory.
Texas’s overall tax burden is about average because of its above average property and sales taxes. But maybe people just look at the income number. I suspect it’s cheap land in growing metro areas. You can’t get a nice new house in most cities with multiple pro sports teams for the price that you can get it in a Dallas or Houston suburb. As for people leaving New York and California - forget about a 25-year-old couple from State U buying property in NYC or SF. But they can have 3 bedrooms and a kitchen island in Texas or Raleigh or Jacksonville etc.
I'm confused because in this convo, I argued taxes were an inherently political topic and you deemed them not so, so I figured a nonpartisan link comparing the tax burdens of 2 states being discussed was fair game:

I almost posted this earlier, but Jason Scheer shot the tweet down as a "non-realignment related" meeting.
I can't help but feel like a resolution will happen one way or another soon though.
These BOR meeting announcements pop up all the time in realignment threads, they never lead to anything. This one will be no different.
I lead all my work emails with this could be nothing, but it could be something. Just to prep the recipient of what's about to come. Really covers your butt either way.
Soon, but not yet. The only thing I can see happening in the next month or so is a deal that keeps that PAC together.
There are some important dates out there, and could push actions.
There are some dates that require notification etc to a conference move.
One I heard was SDSU, if they were to move to the PAC, they have to do so by the end of June, or it costs many $millions, because they are required to notify the Mt west within a year, or pay large penalties. This would be important if they plan to move next year, when the others move out, if they dont plan to move by then then it wont matter.
There are a few of these deadlines I have heard, but as with all of this these things, can be worked out/negotiated. Not to mention they can just push their move back etc. But these deadlines start popping up this summer, so could push some movement, if the parties dont want to deal with the penalties etc.
Not to mention that I'd imagine the Big 12 would want a year's notice before the corner 4 join.
I know the latest talking point is that there's no real rush for a tv deal since the current one isn't up until next year, but I can't imagine the corner 4 can just wait until next spring and then expect to play a full Big 12 schedule a couple months later...

Yeah, that exit fee goes from $3M to $16.5M, iirc if they want to leave in '24-25 after June 1.
The PAC bylaws don't seem to require a set notice period, just that members remain in the conference until 8/1/24.
That said, it still takes time to get everything in order for the move. The first two waves of realignment were pretty quick - Nebraska and Colorado were about 1 year. A&M, Mizzou, WV and TCU all did it in less than 1 year. Every move after that was announced 20+ months ahead of time.

- A&M: August 2011 for the 2012 season
- WV & TCU: Oct 2011 for the 2012 season
- Mizzou: Nov 2011 for the 2012 season
- MD & Rutgers: Nov 2012 for the 2014 season
- OUT: June 2021 for as quickly as ESPN can liquidate the B12
- Houston/BYU/Cinci/UCF: Sept 2021 for 2023 season
- USCLA: June 2022 for the 2024 season
Yes I agree. I was talking a bit more about possible moves to the Pac. Which means if they want to add from the Mt West, there are some dates that come in to play....obviously some of those can be worked out. But for a move by 2024 when USCLA leave they are coming up on hard dates for some potential schools.
Some/all of these are not the end all be all hard dates that something has to happen by. But they are some key dates to incentivise getting things done. Meaning I would think they would want to have a deal done, before brining in new members, and those new members have some dates that things would be important for them.
Im sure both sides would want to know what kind of a deal they are going to get for adding/joining the Pac,
