Behind closed doors

This thread was really just started because I wanted something to talk about. It's impossible to know what these coaches are thinking other than Fran. He's just jealous.

I chalk it more up to laziness than any sort of real jealousy or malice.

I picture it like this. Some assistant coach is filling out his ballot and thinking "Iowa State lost Kane and Ejim? Gonna be a bit down this year."

I doubt there is malice for Fred. ISU lost a lot last year, and no one was sure how they'd be this year. McKay was largely unknown, BDJ had a prior history, Monte was taking over full duty at the point for the first time, and Niang was unproven stepping up into what was Ejim's role last year. Last year, Ejim drew the best big in most cases, which gave Niang a lot more room to work. McKay is filling in nicely now this year, but he wasn't known.

In terms of the Coach's poll, I think Big 12 teams will have a hard time no matter what (unless they are KU). Coaches vote up their own conferences, and every other P5 conference has more teams to vote...

Many knowledgeable fans believed ISU could challenge for a conference championship this year but the preseason Big12 coaches poll picked ISU 5th. Why the disconnect? The top 25 coaches poll has us quite a bit lower today in the rankings compared with the AP poll, and that's not common this far into the season.

Deep down coaches are envious at the success Fred has achieved so quickly utilizing innovative recruiting strategies. We all hear the loud drumbeat of TransferU and to a lesser extent doing things the "right way" and there are some honest feelings driving that sentiment. Fred is new to the country club of college coaching and he didn't wait his turn. He just walked right in and upset the apple cart.

On a personal level it's pretty hard to dislike Fred Hoiberg, but when your job is to beat him at basketball it gets a little easier. The trouble is that it's hard to beat Fred Hoiberg at anything.

You do realize that the coaches aren't the ones that actually fill the ballot out right?

Even though he probably doesn't fill it out, I like to imagine Huggy Bear filling it out with fried chicken fingers in the middle of a drunken haze. I guess I'll fill this ******* ******** out.
