One thing that I never realized about their offense, and the game commentators talked about it, is that if a wide receiver's number is not called, they don't even try. Look at the game again, if you look at the wide receivers, only one really goes and runs a route, the others make a short little job and give up.
I think that was a this game only thing. Up 35-0 with 10 inches of rain in 24 hours, you don't feel like trying. IMO this is what got Russell hurt. He seemed to be the only one giving it his all. If you are not playing hard, someone is going to get hurt.
It wasn't just this game, the announcers were talking about it jumping off the game film from previous games.
And Mangino was calling the plays. CW tweeted earlier today that he's called every play this year.
Russell for hurt because he bent over and lowered his helmet to use as a spear directly into the DB's helmet. His injury made it a textbook example of why players shouldn't do that. An extra yard isn't worth breaking your neck.
Mangino was manginious during the first 3 quarters of the Iowa game. Mix it up, pick and chose, in which quarter or half of any game was he incompetent? Who knows whether he's the problem.
I guess it depends on the circumstance. If the extra yard is to win a National Championship or Super Bowl it would be worth it to me. But if it is to try to hang 70 on a team you are already beating soundly then no it isn't worth it.
If your coach is tells the team that you need to hang 70 on Iowa State, you can't be satified with a lowly 38 points. I'd say the first team was trying a little too hard since they shouldn't have even been in the game.
But hanging 70 gives you style points in front of the cool kids (aka selection committee)
Yeah but they wouldn't need style points if they actually played a decent school in the non-con.
also why I didn't want to hear any complaints from Briles about being left out of the playoffs last year.
Curious if CPR dictated the change to Joel and Mangino - in trying to make a point - decided to just run the ball to prove to CPR he shouldn't meddle in Mangino's offense. Except maybe it worked?
Each ISU QB has his own set of plays. They each know the play book but obviously SR is not going to run running plays that he can't execute. I've blogged before that Lanning is a Tebow prototype. He's big and runs like a fullback. This extra dimension gives the OL a split second to take advantage of their defensive opponent since the D doesn't know if the play is going left/right to running back or QB or lateral to WR around or a pass. With SR the D only squeezes straight ahead knowing he isn't an option other than a scramble when in trouble. SR is easier to defend for our opponents. They play tight to our receivers since out OL can't block long enough. The Lanning offense is what our team needs. He is better skilled at faking handoffs and certainly more powerful a runner. He's doing what he did at Ankeny. It's a ball control offense that confuses the DL with deception and having a second good back who can break tackles. Shocking it took so long for our coaches to see that! For SR to be successful he needs more time for our WR's to separate. Our OL couldn't do that so his throws were hurried. We have seen the results. Using Mike Warren earlier would have been a huge help as well. If we start the season with Lanning/Warren we are 4-2.
