Basketball Walk-Ons

6'2" 195 lbs
- High volume shooter, low volume scorer
- Despite my height, I'm proficient at getting my shot blocked
- I once sunk a half court shot during intramurals. We still lost in embarrassing fashion.
- The same intramural team was appropriately named Short, White and Slow.
- I once failed miserably trying to guard Loren Meyer at the Rec Center
- I can dribble but prefer to travel worse than Svi Mykhailiuk
- I was in classes with both Fred Hoiberg and Hurl Beechum
- Julius Michalik once about ran over me on his bike on my way to Curtiss
- I can wave a towel from the bench like nobody's business
- I can also hold other people back on the bench that are amazed when someone else dunks the ball
- I have 4 years of eligibility left, 5 with the inevitable medical redshirt

scrappy, plays the game the right way
guy you'd love your daughter to marry
gets the most out of his ability

actually pretty good outside shot and defender
but zero ball handling and court vision

10.5 years of marching/pep band experience
so I think I know a lot about watching these games
certainly know a lot about watching losing games

the only thing more extensive than my badness at trumpet was my loudness
I came up with a lot of those silly chants at basketball games you all hate, too

Put me in, coach? :)

Are you walking on at Iowa?

No hair (think aerodynamic)
Back surgery 20 years ago, so I have to lay down after any strenuous activity
Former smoker (see above about strenuous activity)
Go to horse move (360 degree hanging free throw)

Bio: Playground legend. Once was invited to join an intramural team at college by an actual basketball player. Beat a girl one on one in college who was all conference in high school.

Sorry, that's the most impressive I could make it.

-2nd team all conference as a high school senior (baseball)
-Bench warmer as high school junior with some solid JV minutes
-Likely (you know, with some injuries) to dress varsity as high school senior until season was shortened by injury
-Roommate at ISU was 2 year JUCO player and I was a better (slow pitch softball) player than him
-Could dunk (a volleyball) until weight and gravity teamed up against me
-Was built well and in good shape when I landed my wife; now the words "outkicked his coverage" get thrown my way a lot
-Thinning hair combined with the bright lights of Hilton give me a decent chance of blinding the guy I'm guarding as he takes me off the dribble
-Solid candidate to go down with back spasms at any given moment
-Appealed to the NCAA for additional eligibility in '94. Case is still under review but I've got a good feeling.

Forgot my vertical: (height 5'8):

I touched (grazed) the rim once my sophomore year before practice.

I think it was a Monday so it was about as fresh as my legs were going to be. No interwebs videos/camera phones back then so no proof, just going to have to have faith in my word.

6'3", haven't stepped on the scale in awhile because I don't want to see.

Played before the days of 3 point shots.
High school coach once called me 'Hercle Ivy' at half time (derisively, jacked up a lot of shots, hit few).
Was able to touch the bottom of the rim with a running start. Have shown no improvement in vertical since.
Played a lot of baseball. Had the speed to turn doubles into singles.

Pretty solid resume.

  • Age: 66
  • Health: Knees and hips are still okay (hell, actually really good for 66!) but would probably blow an achilles within five minutes. Right rotator cuff is torn and not repaired, have not tried to shoot a ball in a few years.
  • Experience: Dana House intramurals, lowest class. Nickname was "Hoops" but that changed to "Oops" after my turnover in OT lost us a game.
  • Hands: No left and see "Oops"
  • Vertical: Can touch the net.
  • Flexibility: Bad. Matt Blair was trying to instruct me in a basketball drill and I was so awkward and stiff that he asked "Is there something wrong with your knees".
  • When goofing around in the gym I could do a good imitation of Gene Mack's flat shot and skipping running/dribbbling style. Only other fans of that era will know what I am talking about.

I have a 20 year old son who is actually a student, so more eligible than you guys.

He's 6'1" and 170 pounds. His senior year in high school, he averaged 6 points, 8 boards, and 5 assists a game on a terrible team. Was a captain, as kids who scored more than him were not exactly reliable or socially adept. Not exactly lighting it on fire but if he is needed to save ISU basketball, I'm sure he's all in.

I wanted to call this post "useful" but most of us now see that as "tool". ;)

31 year old former hockey player.

1 year of basketball experience in 5th grade.

Basketball career effectively ended when I hip checked a kid into the front row of the bleachers playing transition defense.

Willing to make a comeback.

You could be the Draymond Green of Cyclone basketball.

-Forgot to add that I kill it during shootaround, won't miss a shot. Different story once the game starts. (my friends always pointed this out)
-Second place in under 6' intramural, class C, 3-on-3 men's basketball.
-Once teamed up with my wife at ISU for intramural mixed 2-on-2's. The guy I had to guard was good, but we came out even on that side. The girl she had to guard was 5'11" and a freaking beast in the paint. Last time I could ever talk my wife into playing basketball.
-Do have footage from our intramural games on VHS somewhere around the house. Godfrey house, 5-on-5, 3rd place.
-Played pick up basketball on a team opposite Kenny Pratt once.
-Crash the boards hard, with mixed results

I figured most were GPA boosters and understood they're going to put in a lot of time but receive a bunch of free gear in the meantime!

Not the last person on the bench for varsity team

Good at uncontested layups
Scrimmaged against Ben Lamaak in high school
Can spin a basketball on my finger
Lost my eligibility 4 years ago
