Yea, I was always confused as well how a basic band warm-up ended up becoming a cheer that got used all the time.
Lol. That cheer was only used when the opposing team was near the endzone.
That ought to answer why it got used so often...

I was there when it started getting used a lot, I just never "got it". Other than being loud, it just seemed like we were to lazy to establish a real red zone defense cheer.
Also, marching band entrance video? That sounds sweet!. Pre-game tweaks? I'm sure they are minor, but color me skeptical.
The tweaks were good. The transition from "CYCLONES" to the tunnel is faster, cooler looking and more efficient now. Also, more people will be marching by adding most of the alternates to the top line with the sousas. Generally good resposnes from the people I talked to.
Also, as I said in my edit #7 is no more. Sounds like there WILL be a new red zone cheer. Possibly from Planets and NOT mars. Again, people seemed excited about it.
Ah, that doesn't sound too bad. Anything that gets more kids on the field is a good thing in my book. I was worried that it was something like finally being forced to drop "Go Cyclones, Go" from pre-game or increased involvement from JJ.
The director will often say things like, "You guys are [insert task here] like Hawkeyes!" which is promptly followed by loud hissing. Rest assured that Hawkeyes aren't exactly welcomed in the band.
You will see new uniforms this year, hopefully for UNI.

Sloup, do you know what the reduced and original tempos are? I can't remember. All I know is it sounds and looks BA now that it's back up to tempo!
Is there a "Junior Varsity" marching band?
Nope, just a cool piece of band history.
I'm still somewhat in the loop. The New Unis will debut this year. They are not in yet though. Will hopefully have them for the opener.
Also, the band is getting an entrance video on the new scoreboard.
I'm a band alum also and just visited Ames this past weekend. The new director is awesome and you're definitely going to get your wish. The new director was on the ISU drumline in college and he's looking to add some more "College-y things" to the repetoire. He's tweaked pregame and added some new commands. Speaking with current band members they really like him and he's pushing them to be much better.
I think fans will appreciate some of the new stuff.
EDIT: The power chord "#7" is reportedly no more.
To answer a few questions. Yes, as Sloup said the band is getting new uniforms hopefully before UNI and new drums in December.
The band is playing I'm On a Boat, Forget You, etc. as new songs and All of the lights has been requested as a stand tune. Also All I do is Win will be a short cheer. There is also a cool new School song ending/ ISU chant that has been put in.
Pregame is faster and should be much better. The Cyclone set now moves down the field and breaks away into the tunnel.
As for the Iowa Shorts I'll try to get to the bottom of this today...may need to be running laps...
And the rumored Boy Band show is going to be a HUGE crowd pleaser. At least in the student section...I'm almost sure that if you listen closely in each song that you will hear the student section singing the words.
The band as a whole will be MUCH better this year. I personally think it will be a night and day difference from last year to this year. We are fielding our biggest band in school history (344) and expect a lot better and louder sound. We are all very excited for this year and I would be expecting big things!
