Band members

Aggies for sure (though Jsmith wins with Aggie Band).

Aggies are cultish. The band just likes to drink, and occasionally do a show.

I don't know. I think the band would leave the Big 12 if they thought they could do more drinking.

Steve Smyth used to be a tenor player years ago at ISU and was a band director in the Des Moines Area went to Okie state for his masters who is probably the best band in the big 12. Tremendous Music program. taught at central oklahoma and is now ISU's marching band director and will do a hellava job. As a former drummer he will get it done.

Matt Smith is at Kansas after a stint at Indiana.

He also made a quick (2 year I think) stop over at a small school in SW Iowa before Dowling.

I was at ISU for 5 1/2 but only in the band for 4. (00 - 03)

How old is Mr. Smyth? Seems like a good guy.

I spent two years with Marty Province and 2 with Matt Smith. The difference in the attitude of the band was night and day unfortunately. Smitty was a pretty good guy, but he treated everyone like they were in high school. The vets didn't like it and the younger kids never loosened up.
Has the band recovered from the high school atmosphere of the Smitty era? I hope so.

I had Smith for 5 years and loved it. I think people just hate change in general.

Edit: I was in school for 6 years and in band for 5 (Fall '04-'08)

I think it got a lot better after the majority of the people who couldn't get past the difference in styles and complained about it constantly graduated. Not that Smith was perfect or that there isn't some truth to what you said, but attitude and atmosphere go both ways. (member 05-09)

Yeah, I think it was a bit of both. Most of the resistance came in Smiths first year when people had the most trouble getting used to him and I think he was still trying to figure out how to best run the band. His second year was better by far so by the time you guys were there he probably had a lot better sense of the band as a whole.

At first I didn't feel as though he treated us like adults, especially those of us who were 21+. His second year, when he got to know the upperclassmen, he seemed to trust us more.

I think a blending of styles would have been better. Marty let the band screw around a bit too much and Smitty had a hard time trying to add some structure because of it.

I marched Colts '00 and '01 so I would have been fine with running sprints, but I still wanted to be treated like an adult.

This was probably the more diplomatic way to say what I did.

I just had a couple of 6-year band members in my section freshman year and it got old hearing them constantly say "That's not how Marty would have done it". It sounds like the new guy is getting the benefit of the doubt from the older members, which is nice to hear.

Completely agree. I think fun could still be had with smith there (god knows i managed to), but members needed to be treated like adults. The party scene for the band went downhill while i was at ISU (03-07), as the older members graduated and it became all smitty-era members.

Id be interested to know how it is under the new director, an alum, who kind of knows what things are all about here.

He knows our secrets!

No doubt. The pictures looked pretty nice, but there's no substitute for seeing 300+ of them on the field.

I have not seen pics - please tell me the red is going to match. I don't want to start a uni thread drift, just hoping we don't anything like 2008 and 4 different shades of red. And thanks to any current and former band members. You guys are a big part of the gameday experience.

In my two years with Smith it became near impossible to get any underclassmen to let loose with us. I know band is about more than partying, but I felt it hurt the comraderie on the practice field as well. I'm still best friends with people from band more because of the parties than anything else. It would make me sad if noone went to Buffalo, Agent Orange, or full band parties anymore.

When freshmen show up and are treated just like they were in high school band, it makes it tough for them to realize theres more to it than practice and gameday.

That said, before Smith got there, there were a lot of people just content with walking around and barely playing their instruments. It got old at times since I was much more of a perfectionist than that.

I'm thinking that an alum will probably be able to find the best of both worlds.

EDIT: Crap I miss band.

The sports teams seem to get at least a thread per year on uniforms. Can't the band get one each decade? :jimlad:
