Babb's defense

I don't understand why Babb is so much better a defender than Allen. Is it just effort or athletic ability, or can some guys just play great defense?

Defense is mostly effort, intelligence, and awareness. Babb has those attributes as well as pride, where Allen does not. Pretty simply really.

Probably athletic ability and some guys can just play great D. Babb plays a different kind of D at times though. Face guards quite a bit at times to prevent opposing player from even touching the ball on an offensive possession. While Babb is doing that, everyone else is playing man to man. Sometimes in a loose man to man or a prevent man to man.

No need to diss Chris Allen. Allen has definitely improved his play and is a big part of the success this year. Chris Babb is just an exceptional defender. He has great instincts, intelligence and awareness of his opponent. And is also a big part of the success this year.

Each and every player has found a role and a way to contribute. CFH has done a remarkable job. And the whole team has bought into the TEAM concept.

Effort, and fundamentals. Allens effort has come a long way defensively since the beginning of the season but he still has trouble keeping his guy in front of him. Once you get your hips turned youre done.

It is hard to understand Dixon getting selected to the all-defensive team over Babb. Dixon never started a game, and only averaged 26.5 minutes. It would be interesting to see what kind of ppg and shooting percentages the players Dixon guarded had versus those guarded by Babb.

Guess we just have to trust the coaches on this one, but it would be interesting to know the criteria.

I an not dissing Allen, I only use him to compare because he seems to be very similar to Babb athletically. Allen really looks like he is working on defense, but obviously the results are not the same.

How am I "dissing" Chris Allen? The previous poster asked a question and I answered it correctly and fairly. If you don't like it maybe you can get Allen to consistently fight through screens, pop out on shooters, and not lazily stand near the lane. Yes he's made improvements, but that doesn't get Allen a free pass, nor does it give anyone else on the team one for that matter.

There's a big difference in getting on Allen, who has all the physical tools to be a good defender and getting on someone like Christopherson. How many times has Scott been a liability on defense this year? Too many times to count. The difference is Scott is generally atheletically outmatched despite giving 100% effort while defending. For better or worse he's maximizing his talent. Allen on the other hand minimizes his through sporadic, but frequent apathy. I'm sorry but there's no defending that.

There's a reason why players like a Babb or a Withey are such big fan favorites. They typically play very smart, maximize their talents by being smart and having great awareness, and above all else play with 100% effort at all times. All I ask as a fan is that you play hard and act like you're paying attention/using your head. If a player sucks because he has no talent, then it's on the coach for not doing a better job of recruiting/utilizing his roster.

CFH goes out of his way in all his postgame press conferences to praise Babb and his work on the defensive side of the ball. Babb's been a tremendous defender, and I'm not sure it happens without Hoiberg pumping him up at every opportunity. How often do you see a player that's primarily a jump shooter reinvent himself as a stopper?
To be fair Babb was also known as a great perimeter defender at Penn State also, so I don't think this is a new thing for him. One of the reasons I was really excited to have him here was his defense.

For Baylor, Babb versus Pierre and CA versus Pierre were like night and day. Babb cast a continuous shadow over Pierre. CA played so far off Pierre that he had openings to shoot. When Babb runs around, he plays so upright that he is like playing against a wall.

Yeah, I think it is more of a function of sound mechanics versus effort. Babb does a great job of keeping his balance and squaring up to the shooter. He doesn't bite hard on fakes or crossovers.

All players are different. For ONE thing, Allen is only 6 foot 3 inches. The same as Scotty. And 2 inches shorter than Babb. Perhaps Babb's length while maintaining good quickness is a big part of his defensive prowess.

Other than skin color, Allen and Scotty are more similar with Allen possessing a bit more quickness. Babb is taller.......2 inches taller. That is a HUGE factor IMO in playing defense if you can maintain quickness. Plus, IMO Babb is a very smart defender. Babb instinctively plays very smart. Each player is different.

Allen is playing hard IMO. The whole team is. Earlier in the year, I agree that Allen lacked 100% effort at all times. And now at times, he still lets the previous play affect the next play. But he is improving.

This may have already been mentioned, but Babb got absolutely robbed not being a member of the Big 12 All-Defensive team. I thought he was a no-brainer. Rivaled any other players defense in the country, but gets left off the list. Not to diminish the accomplishment of the other Cyclones that made All-Big 12, but this just blows me away.

Agree, they should've asked Pledger, McGruder and Denmon what they thought.

Also, I personally think Withey is getting a little too much credit. For every really nice defensive play (usually a block) he has at least one moving screen (I swear he leads the nation in moving screens) or giant hack on the opposing players. As mentioned before, it seemed to me that many of his plays came on help D, which makes them good plays and will get you recognized but in my mind is not the same as playing shutdown face guard ball like Babb.

Calling Withey a smart defender is a bit of an overstatement. I would call him more of a physical gifted defender in reference to his length.

Babb tweet from last night:

Also, don't worry about me not being recognized. I don't need some guys in suits and my name on a plaque to tell me I play D! #cyclonenation

man, gotta love that guy!
