Babb's defense

Nothing against Babb, but he was not near quick enough to keep up with Jackson. His length helped him out a few times plus some good help defense.

Damn, Jackson played a good game. Wish we could have had Babb on him the whole game, but we were just outmatched at too many other positions then. Believe Tryus was guarding a 6-10 post for the majority of the game, not sure which one.

Great defender Babb is... even better when he can get a few threes to fall :)

I can remember one time in the second half where Jackson beat Babb off the dribble with his quickness. He did remarkably better than Allen.

Well, I hope you realize that Babb wasn't defending Jackson in the first half? First half Jackson had something like..26-28 points? 2nd half he had 6 or 7, but Babb wasn't put on him right away if I remember correctly(?). I think Jackson got a few FTs and a 3, then Hoiberg decided to put Babb on him with only a few minutes elapsed in the 2nd. Jackson got shut down after that.

I think Babb was put on him with about 10 minutes to play give or take a minute or two.

I realize.

Like I said, we couldn't have Babb on him the whole game because we were mismatched at too many other positions... needed Babb to guard one of their bigs.

Believe he had 18 in the first half and 15 in the second. Babb did remarkably better, but Jackson just had a great game. Flew by Babb of the dribble once or twice and hit a few contested threes with Babb in his face.

Babb played great... Jackson just had one of the best single game performances I have seen in Hilton in some time.

Prior to Hoiberg putting Babb on Jackson at the 10:00 mark in the second half, Jackson scored 29 points and was owning the Cyclone defense. After that point Jackson scored a total of 6 points and was virtually unheard from the rest of the game. Seems like he did a decent enough of shutting him down to me.

Again, taking something out of context.

Previous poster said he didn't think Babb would be able to match the quickness of Jackson.

He didn't, but was able to recover with his length and had some great help defense. Babb played a great defensive game... I was unaware on the exact time of the switch. Who was he guarding before? Was way up in the cheap seats and could not tell.

Correct. Quincy Miller was Babbed in the 1st half (6 points in the game) and Jackson in the latter part of the 2nd half (6 points).

CFH goes out of his way in all his postgame press conferences to praise Babb and his work on the defensive side of the ball. Babb's been a tremendous defender, and I'm not sure it happens without Hoiberg pumping him up at every opportunity. How often do you see a player that's primarily a jump shooter reinvent himself as a stopper?

Great patience by the staff waiting until late in the game to make the switch. Babb on Jackson the whole game would risk foul trouble for Babb, plus have more of an influence on Babb's offense. There was going to be a mismatch somewhere, so make the witch at a crucial point in the game where we have enough time to capitalize, but Baylor not enough to figure out the counter.

Exactly, I agree with this.

I understand what you're saying. Babbs length allowed him to stay in front of Jackson, he was also picking him up at half court and not allowing him to get a head start like Allen was. Babb also picked his pocket 2 or 3 times which we haven't really seen him do a lot this year. Those steals were huge and I think gave us the momentum. Sure Jackson hit 1 three with babb on him and I think got by him once (babb had no help on the backside), but that's going to happen. Scotty crossed up jackson (may have been the other Baylor guard) pretty good on the other end too, that was sweet!

If Scotty would have finished that ( or thown it down for that matter  ) place would have went crazy.

Nice crossover, spin move.

Eh, Withey is a defensive force down low. I think he deserves it. If Babb isn't first team all defensive team though that would be a travesty. Unfortunately for Babb, his stats aren't as tangible like guys who get a lot of blocks or steals.

Babb's play removes the Big 12's best scorers every possession. Withey is largely making his impact off of help defense in 24 minutes a game.

This may have already been mentioned, but Babb got absolutely robbed not being a member of the Big 12 All-Defensive team. I thought he was a no-brainer. Rivaled any other players defense in the country, but gets left off the list. Not to diminish the accomplishment of the other Cyclones that made All-Big 12, but this just blows me away.

Me too, that one really surprised me.

Wait, a 5'-9" guy is quicker than a 6'-5" guy? Unfathomable. Good thing the tall guys longer arms made up for that...

I don't understand why Babb is so much better a defender than Allen. Is it just effort or athletic ability, or can some guys just play great defense?
