Average auto loan now over $30k

I don't preach my money philosophy to others, I just hope people are doing their homework before they are buying a car. I took a car loan for granted until I sat down and did the math and compared how long it would take to save up the money to how much it actually cost to "buy" it now.

It's up to you to decide what your priorities are, just do yourself a favor and educate yourself first.

in theory he is correct.

i've always wondered why people in san francisco don't live like homeless people for 5 years, bank all their income, then move to the midwest where they can buy a palace in cash.

I live in SF and use my extra income to buy properties in Iowa. I know others out here that do the same. You hear stories of people who work in silicon valley who live outside Google in a truck. If your work campus has a workout facility with showers your good to go. Shortest commute ever!

i'll make it simple. You live in Iowa because its cheap to live there, probably have family there, and want to live a simple life. That type of person tends to me more conservative, spend less, and saves more. That is just normal for them (you? i don't know.) and always will be. Its not wrong, its different than someone that lives in NYC or Seattle or LA that would rather spend a little more, to have a little more going on. People acting like their way is better is the annoying part, perhaps it is for you, but for some people they would rather spend and live now, than save and live later. Its a different lifestyle philosophy and there is no correct and incorrect.

The reality is that for the majority of people in Washington and Iowa it's like this.

I'm not going to jump to thatguy's defense, buuut I do agree just a little.

I'm from the Midwest and I do carry the conservative spending learned in God's Country. It's a broad brush, but on the whole I'd say a Midwestern person would be a bit more reluctant to cut a big check for a fancy car.

Again...big brush. But I'm "thatguy" when it comes to being conservative with the pocketbook

i want to run away but there's nowhere to run cause everywhere looks the same

Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes all the same..

Man that would make my job easier though.

Remember, 2/3rds of people making $50k to $100k would have trouble coming up with $1k in an emergency.

I find that absolutely baffling. If I were in that situation I would hope what was sitting in my garage and the stuff surrounding it would be completely awesome.

People wouldn't care how others spend there money now, if the spenders would quit complaining when they don't have enough money to retire.

sigh....yes, but those white blocks cost a hell of allot more in Seattle, WA than they do in Marshalltown, IA. I lived in IA for 5 years.

Also it doesn't take watching TV, it requires getting out of your comfort zone, which most smaller town people hate doing.

Midwestern weather, if I had to quantify it, would be worth something like -$125k.

This is nothing compared to most threads. Quality post though.

But you were talking about Iowans living the "simple life". Does paying more for the same house make you less simple? What exactly does someone in a Seattle suburb do differently than someone is a Des Moines suburb that makes them less simple? I'd like to be less simple, do you think a soul patch would do it for me?

No. I think you are hung up on simple life. Iowans live a more conservative life and have a different set of values than people that live in more expensive (thus: desirable) places than Iowa. Again, neither is right or wrong, just is what it is.
You value a dollar more than some people, thus you live in Iowa, didn't move to the water or mountains or big city because of that, probably save more, eat at home most the time, don't have extravagant things, most likely enjoy a nice pair of cargo shorts and talking about how you once saw Jake Knott at an Applebees.

You sound like you really know a lot about everything. Is there any way to live in Iowa and still be cultured? If you have time in your busy life you may want to let the CEO of Applebee's know about your demographic research before they build anymore resturaunts in the state of Washington since they have more than Iowa.

You sound like a giant *******.

I left somewhere far more exciting than wherever you grew up in to move to iowa. Is san Francisco more exciting than iowa? Obviously. Is Tracy CA more existing than west des moines? Probably not. Not everyone in iowa is a hick stitching old overalls together.
He's from DENVER. Everyone in DENVER thinks they it is better than everywhere else. Don't get me wrong I love DENVER, but and have lived a lot of great places, and I'd chose 3 of the 4 over DENVER any day.

sigh...not saying Iowa is bad, just saying that the people that live there most likely have different priorities, desires and goals than a person living in a large expensive city.

also saying Marshalltown is a giant **** hole.
