Athlon's top coaches

Lane Kiffin at number 4 in the top coaches under 40 is a joke. I don't think he has done very much at all and now he is in a place where recruits just fall into your lap. I would rather wait a couple years to evaluate how good of a coach he really is.

My top 3 for basketball:
1. Coach K
2. Izzo
3. Self

For those who don't want to give Athlon any traffic...

Top 30 Coaches Nationally (MBB): NR

Top Big 12 Coaches (MBB):
1. KU
2. WV
3. Texas
4. OU
5. Baylor
6. ISU
7. KSU
8. TCU
9. OSU
10. TTech

Top 10 Coaches Under 40 (CFB and MBB):
1. Brad Stevens, Butler, MBB
2. Shaka Smart, VCU, MBB
3. Pat Fitzgeralnd, Northwestern, CFB
4. Lane Kiffin, USC, CFB
5. Kevin Willard, Seton Hall, MBB
6. Steve Prohm, Murray St., MBB
7. Steve Sarkisian, Washington, CFB
8. Willie Taggart, Western Kentucky, CFB
9. Josh Pastner, Memphis, MBB
10. CFH

How the hell is Fred below Scott Drew?

Two Elite Eights in the last three years, at a mediocre job. ISU has two Elite Eights in its entire history.

Say what you will about the person. (I certainly have.) Say what you will about his coaching ability. (I certainly have.) But you can't argue with the results.

Im just saying he may be a phenomenal recruiter but when it comes to in game coaching, Fred blows him away. That said i still think he's a good coach.

Nice to see Fred getting some good pub as a top 10 coach under 40. Congrats to CFH!

I think that says more about his recruiting abilities than coaching.

Results? Head-to-head, 2-1, the Mayor.

Drew did have the fortune of facing UK later in the tournament this year, after beating the 14, 11, and 10 seeds.

This. Hard to argue with that even though he has the same coaching style as a NBA coach. But what surprises me is Lon Kruger being so high. So what OU has faced sanctions. Did they even make the NIT since he's been there?

Lane Kiffin??? He's got all of 25 wins despite coaching at the cream of the cream of college football programs. Hate the guy.

Also, ouch--what a slap in the face to Travis Ford and Gillispie to have the TCU basketball coach rated higher than them.

He's been there one year.

I'd rank Fred 4th in the under 40 category. The other guys haven't done much

Yes.

One Final Four
One Elite 8.
Two Sweet 16s

At three schools.

13 NCAA tournament appearances at four different schools.

Missed the postseason only 4 times in 22 seasons (not counting UTPA years ... wasn't a Div 1 program back then, but dreadful record).

Kruger is just about right in this ranking.
