Asteroid City movie

He hits me exactly where I live. I've extolled the virtues of The Life Aquatic, in other threads, but in my opinion, it might be my all time favorite film. And several of his other works rank very highly in my esteem as well.
His world building is nearly unmatched, as far as I'm concerned.
I wish I liked them...I see all of them but just not my thing. :(

The Life Aquatic and Rushmore go back and forth as my all time favorite movies. So good.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I've always felt QT was a much better writer than director. I like his stuff for sure, but I highly doubt True Romance, which QT wrote, would be my #1 movie of all time had QT directed it instead of Tony Scott.
Now I've got the damn theme stuck in my head.

I have only ever seen Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Grand Budapest Hotel but I enjoyed them both. Yes, I know I still haven't seen The Royal Tenenbaums and I should.

On TV. I'm not much for paying $$$ to watch in the theater and either being there alone or having my spouse make bad jokes the entire movie. At least at home I can pause it while he talks. :D
Those aren't bad jokes, my dear, they are dad jokes. If they get a laugh even while you are shaking your head in disgust, they have done their job.

Amiright, @Lew?

enabler...

He spent an entire covid year posting at least one Dad joke per day on Facebook, and tagging me on all of them...

I’m indifferent on Wes Anderson. I don’t love his movies, but generally find them entertaining enough to watch and enjoy. I’m sure I’ll watch this one too.

The only movie of his I’ve seen more time than I can count is “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” My oldest daughter absolutely loved this move. (She’s a sophomore at ISU now) but, when this hit DVD, it was a nightly staple at our house before bed time.

Just watched it and it didn't click for me. I'm a huge fan of Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, and the Royal Tenenbaums, but couldn't get into this one at all.

Reminded me of “Brazil“, directed by Terry Gilliam of Monte Python fame. Although, the two movies are vastly different.

Will watch “Asteroids City” again when available online, just to look for details missed the first time around.

I really liked the Royal Tannenbaums, but other than that I'm not much of a WA fan.

A lot like Tarantino movies for me. I try to like them because people rave about them, but I just don't like most of them.

Did you watch his first film Bottle Rocket? (Yes it’s my new avatar)

IMHO it’s a pretty perfect movie and the rest are kind of bloated messes but pretty to look at. Rushmore is kind of an in between and Royal Tannenbaums is the first one w the formula so it makes sense to like it most of all those w same formula.

It fascinates me about how restrictions can actually make the creative process better.

I watched Bottle Rocket maybe 3-4 years after it came out. I didn’t follow movies, so I didn’t know who WA was. I liked BR quite a bit. Saw RT shortly after and really liked it. Frankly at the time I still had no idea who WA was or that he did both movies.
When Life Aquatic came out I thought I’d love it. Same guy that did RT, Bill Murray, etc. I found zero entertainment in Life Aquatic.

For some reason RT really resonates with me. I think the characters are great, the acting is great, and there’s no character in a movie that I wanted to redeem himself more than Hackman’s Royal.

I’m not sure why, but I found Life Aquatic to be Way less funny and I did not care about the characters. To me it had the quirkiness of RT but pretty much little else.

I'm basically the same way.

Bottle Rocket is this amazing totally unique/original thing to me, also kind of funny. Rushmore is actually REALLY funny with some of his style and in my opinion the best written/acted of all of his movies in some ways. RT is the first that uses what is now his "formula" and better than most of the others so I do like it. After that...I enjoy them all for the style but I hesitate to actually call any of them good movies.

I've thought about renting it a dozen times but I keep watching the trailer and thinking this thing is going to put me to sleep. But, I also view Rushmore as tied for the worst movie ever alongside Groundhog Day and A League of Their Own.

I thought Asteroid City was ok. I would’ve thought it was good if it wasn’t for the framing device of it all being a play. That did not work for me at all.

Anyone else feel like Wes Anderson is teetering dangerously close to self parody at this point?
