Assistant coach rumor I am hearing

I think Clonehomer is on to something. I don't want to go down that road, but Nurse =/= Morgan.

People are ******** that the current coach has to go. This may be a way to ease into the new hire without having (as many) recruiting problems when the transition happens. JP signs off on the Nurse hiring with the thought that he is my guy if this season looks like the last for GMac.

I'm not saying this IS what is happening, I'm just saying it is a possibility.

Why in the heck should JP or anyone else think ISU will have better luck with Nurse as HC than we did with GMac?

I appreciate the fact that you guys are just "gaming" here & trying to anticipate JP's next move. My problem with hiring a guy with NO Division One experience in coaching as a "backup plan" if/when we have to fire our coach, is that we're admitting that coaching at ISU is essentially an internship. Heck, why not hire a talented high school kid to be our next coach? We could probably hire him for less than $50k, so we'd have PLENTY of money left for GMac's buyout?

If we're going to be a doormat, let's go whole hog and be the BIGGEST DAMM DOORMAT in the US of A! Nobody likes clown cars that only carry 4 clowns. Fill that damn thing up with 60 or 70 of them! Go big or go home!

So you would prefer to have a no name mid-major head coach than a NBADL head coach? It's not like we will be able to pull in a huge name mid-major if we are looking for a coach next year. Look at what happened at Iowa. They had the money to throw around and they still ended up with Fran McCaffery. Nurse has head coaching experience in a league that is just as much about player development as NCAA basketball.

Remember, he's coming in as an assistant. I'm just saying that if we're looking for a new head coach next year don't write him off as an option.

IF, and right now his hiring is still a rumor, Jeff Grayer becomes an assistant coach at ISU I think he would make be a good fit. His name recognition and his enthusiasm for the team would be a big plus. Grayer is one of my favorite ISU basketball players of all time. I would love to see him back in Cardinal and Gold.

My prediction is that Nick Nurse will pull in one or two European players before the signing period is up.

According to many of the Chicken Little set on this message board we could not do any worse than GMac. I have heard advocates for change for change's sake. Never mind that we can't find the best candidate right now, pull the trigger because ANYTHING would be better. - type of thinking.

I happen to have lost confidence in the head coach, but I think you need to be careful to not end up in a worse situation by moving hastily or at the wrong time.

Again - I AM NOT SAYING I THINK NURSE IS GMAC'S REPLACEMENT; NOR AM I ADVOCATING FOR IT.

I ***** because I care. When Iowa was doing this sort of crap with the Davis to Alford situation, I bought popcorn and enjoyed the show. I don't want to see my alma mater treated like clown shoes.

Would you please knock it off with the clown stuff? We get enough of that from our neighbors to the east...

Fran McCaffery? Right now, compared to our head coach, Fran McCaffery is the Second Coming of Dr. Naismith.

I would take Nurse as our head coach if he could start TODAY (although I think there are better choices out there). But I don't think Nurse should be offered the job if he is an assistant to McDermott and McDermott has another year that goes in the crapper. We need a clean start with an up-and-comer like Floyd was 15 years ago.

I really want Jeff to come here, i think he could be a really good here. Even if he did suck its not like it would matter much as I dont think it could get much worse, especially recruiting wise.

But when GMac gets the axe, all the assistants will walk the plank with him. Jeff Grayer included. No new coach wants to get saddled with the former coach's "leftovers", even if the assistant is a great "company man". So you've got to figure in that we would be hiring him with the almost absolute certainty that we're going to have to fire him within a year, maybe two at the MOST.

Since the day of walking the plank has not come yet and will be determined by future events that are out of any one's control today. I would just like to say I think Jeff Grayer would make a great assistant coach for the Cyclones. His name recognition and enthusiasm are two proven components in making a top flight salesman for the university. When a recruit looks at Jeff they will see someone who has proven themselves on the court and know what it takes to be on top. Jeff's integrity and enthusiasm should land us some good solid players in the future. I hope this rumor becomes a fact. It would be nice to see Grayer back on the sidelines for the Cyclones.

My prediction is that Nick Nurse brings in one or two European players before the end of the signing deadline.

It's like when you were in college, and eventually you had been at the bar for so long and drank so much that all the girls started looking good.....

If you lower your standards your opportunities for success increase. I have no idea how to relate that to MBB but the logic is sound in bar-world.

I've got it! Open up your checkbook, buy out McDermott and help fund our next coach's salary. Problem solved, and you can get your blood pressure back down. Next topic...

Just throwing it out there, but any chance that bringing in Grayer would also get Darius Stevens to come here? I thought that they were close when they honored Barry Stevens last year.
NO!!!!!!!!!! Not going to happen, no matter how many times it is brought up.

NO!!!!!!!!!! Not going to happen, no matter how many times it is brought up.

So, you're saying there is a chance:wink:. In all seriousness though, what is the scoop on Kevin Grayer and Jeff Grayer, Jr? Potential walk-ons if their dad came to coach? Could Kevin be a player to spell Boozer off the bench as a 6'4" guard that can score and rebound?

Have you ever added any information on these boards or do you just take potshots at the guys who try and provide relevant information?

I try to from time to time, but have given up on doing it for basketball. I was asking a serious question though. He is always so upbeat about everything going on with the BBall team, yet none of it comes true. An average fan knows better.

NO!!!!!!!!!! Not going to happen, no matter how many times it is brought up.

It hasn't been brought up since February so maybe calm down a little. Our team needs and coaching staff has changed dramatically since then. Back then it was dismissed because we were in on better recruits than Darius, while now we obviously aren't. From everything I've seen he hasn't signed with anyone and if he has a shred of talent we could use him.

Grayer rumors

I was tempted to post on this subject in my blog, but I swore I would avoid MBB until next Fall at the earliest. Maybe I'm all wet, but I find the rumors regarding Grayer possibly being hired as an assistant to Mac to be somewhat insulting.

1- While a great Cyclone, the man has no coaching experience. Period. This is about as illogical as people lobbying for Hoiberg to come back to Ames as a head coach. At least Hoiberg has been involved in basketball in the administrative realm.

2- I feel like McDermott would be taking advantage of a man who may be desperate to get into coaching. You don't get your feet wet in the Big 12. Is this really in Grayer's best interest?

3- And the thing that irritates me the most: You're dragging a Cyclone great into your own mess. It feels like a desperate attempt by McDermott to cover his own rear with a name that he knows will get Cyclone fans excited. I don't like that one bit

A lot of people seem to be excited about this move. And while I agree that it's always nice to bring former Cyclones back into the fold, I don't like the situation and circumstances. The phrase "smoke and mirrors" comes to mind.

If McDermott honestly believes that Grayer could come in and coach up this team and hit the recruiting trail guns a blazin', great. But one word comes to mind. Blasphemy: irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred, priceless, etc. If you're going to drag one of the most highly regarded former Cyclones into this mess, you better damn well believe that the hire will provide more than a PR boost.
