Assistant Coach Possibilities Thread

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

a lifelong assistant who has no desire to take over the program would be a good fit that fred needs. deace compared it to nrom parker @ iowa. no ego, just a win attitude and good experience and work ethic. experience on the bench and in the game of bball.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

You guys are missing the point. It's ok to get shot down in this...in fact I think we would, but you have to ask these guys.

Re: Coach Morgan

Good recruiter. Bad X and O's guy. Below average coach. Below average satellite dish salesman. If he had any sort of talent, he wouldn't be selling satellite dishes instead of coaching on someone's staff at any school.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

I think we've probably already been shot down, just a hunch. But at an assistant position I think that's ok as long as we eventually get our blue-haired Merlin.
Would be happy with any of these:
Steve Fisher (retired from Michigan & San Diego State)
John Cheney (retired from Temple)
Eddie Sutton
Dr. Tom
Don Meyer (Northern State U. coach who retired in Feb.)

Fisher isn't retired. He is still head coach at SDSU.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

How many assistant coaches does the NCAA allow. I think there is a limit at least on how many guys can recruit or scout off campus. Can you add unlimited other coaches by creating jobs like "Director of Basketball Operations" or "Video Tape Rewinding Expert" in order to skirt the rule.
I would like to put in my name for VTWE. I also can press the chapter skip button on DVD's.

Seriously, though, I would love Davis on our bench, but it probably would never happen.
Dear Mr. Fudd,

We regret to inform you that your resume was pitched when we realized that you couldn't abbreviate "Video Tape Rewinding Expert" correctly. Thank you for your interest in the position!

Sincerely,

Re: Coach Morgan

Wayne gave us some nice success after the LE debacle, but I think his strengths are similar to Fred's, and that is good recruiting and good player relationships. Don't get me wrong, those are two of the most important qualities in a high d-1 basketball coach, but Fred will probably look for a an x and o guy with head coaching ability to complement his own strengths.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

I really think you need someone that Fred knows, and trusts and respects. This can not be someone who doesnt have a connection with Fred, or they will never be on the same page. Fred has his way that he wants to run his team, and if you bring in someone who doesnt know him they will have to take to much time to build a relationship. It needs to be someone that Fred knows, and knows Fred.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

Fran Fraschilla - if he doesn't take a HC job somewhere out east, that is.

Re: Coach Morgan

The facts show that Morgan was a better coach than many give him credit for. Obviously he has an oustanding resume for an assistant, other than the fact that he has been out of basketball for quite awhile now.

But... NO! Time to move on. Time for a new start with the Mayor. Plus, there are a lot of other younger assistants out there with great connection as well. And of course, I doubt Morgan and JP would have the best working relationship as well.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

I know people are hung up on experience but why is it required to have an "old guy"?
FH knows multiple NBA players and ex-players who in turn know people all across the coaching spectrum. Get a young, dynamic staff of up-and-comers who will bust their *** on the recruiting trail. Fred's got a million guys he can call if he forgets how to run a lay-up drill.

I would say his head coaching career was actually not too bad. Decent, not great, not bad. He won a conference title at one school, and then won an NCAA Tournament game at another school. He's no Larry Eustachy or Tim Floyd, but alot of hard-working coaches outo there haven't accomplished what he did as a head coach.

But its time to move on and move forward, plus I doubt Morgan or JP would want this.

Re: Who will be Fred's on bench mentor?

The only negative I took from the PC yesterday was him saying he had numerous chances to be an assitant coach in the NBA. It would have been really nice if he took one of those positions to help groom him for this experience...

Re: Coach Morgan

This is a great idea. Then we could hire Johnny Orr as director of basketball operations, Tim Floyd as a special advisor, Larry E as Entertainment Director, and Bruce VanDeVelde as the Beaver.

But if we bring back BVD, does he lose his internet message board privileges?

Part of me thinks hiring Johnny and having this reunion tour type of staff would be highly entertaining. Effective? Well, it could be I guess. But definitely entertaining. If they had not already sold enough tickets after hiring Fred, adding Johnny would fill the rest of the seats.
