Assistant Coach Possibilities Thread

Re: If we want to get an "in" to Chicago recuits hire this guy

Webster definitely has the in with Chicago recruits. Some of the top Chicago Public League coaches went on record saying not retaining Webster was already a mark against the new DePaul staff. He also has experience at some good programs as well.

That being said, it's much easier to **** of Chicago Public League coaches than it is to woo them. Webster being here doesn't really give them anything, so who knows what would happen.

Yeah most of the high school coaches weren't too pleased with the DePaul hire. Chicago is loaded with young high school talent coming the next few years as well. Even more than normal, which is saying something.

Re: If we want to get an "in" to Chicago recuits hire this guy

I wanted Iowa to take a look at him as well because I think he is a very good recruiter in the Chicago area, but I think he is looking for a head coaching gig somewhere and probably not willing to sign on as an assistant for very long/if at all.

You're right though; if ISU could get him it would probably be a good move.

Re: If we want to get an "in" to Chicago recuits hire this guy

I would take Webster in a heartbeat. I imagine Bruce Weber will jump at the chance to take him. Hell Mcdermott might at Creighton.

Re: Terry Carroll?

Saw his name mentioned in the John Wilkins thread...I think he would be a phenomenal hire for one of the assistants.

Not sure he'd be interested since he's got the gig at SCC and he's been an assistant once at ISU but the dude can coach and has head coaching experience.
I could be wrong, but I can't imagine coaching at the juco level would be that fun. You are dealing with a lot of thugs with attitudes. As assistant gig at ISU might look pretty good to a guy like Terry Carroll right about now.

Re: If we want to get an "in" to Chicago recuits hire this guy

Trust me you don't want this guy. He's always looking for a way to help himself out. While at Illinois he was recruiting Darius Miller and Deandre Liggins, both whom ended up committing to Kentucky once Webster took an assistant job at Kentucky.

Webster would not fit in at Iowa State.

How is that different from almost any coach in NCAA?

Yeah, I don't want the guy that brings in talent. That is a terrible idea.

Re: Terry Carroll?

Also, getting in at this point, he would have a minimum of four years. No worries about getting fired as long as he does his job well. I think that Hoiberg could easily get him if he wanted.

How about an old LE guy like Steve Barnes?

I am not sure Steve Barnes would be welcomed by the university administration after the way the LE situation went down. I believe he went down fighting...

Re: Terry Carroll?

You guys might want to do some research on Terry Carroll. He left his gig at Denver in a VERY strange way. Basically had a melt down, stopped showing up for practice and the school finally had to step in and get a coach to step in. Maybe he's got some help but that is a risky hire if ever there was one.

Re: Terry Carroll?

If you'll remember, He gave up a juco gig to come on the staff last time. He'd certainly make more here, and lest we not forget that he is an Ames native. I'd be perfectly ok with him on staff again.

Billy Gillispe........as an assistant?

I think this would be a great move by Hoiberg if he could get him on as an assistant. This would be a great move too by Gillispe getting him back into the game, not as a coach, but at least as an assistant. Knows the ropes of Big 12 basketball and has recruiting ties in Texas. Win Win for both sides in my opinion.

Re: Billy Gillispe........as an assistant?

Not gonna happen, ever.

PS. This will be announced later this week...because that's how "not gonna happen" works in Ames, IA.

Re: Billy Gillispe........as an assistant?

That would be something, but I don't see it happening.

Re: Billy Gillispe........as an assistant?

IF that happened along with the other things that have happened in the past 3 days here in Cyclone land, the earth would fall out of orbit.
