Assistant Coach Possibilities Thread

Re: The Perfect Tex Winters for Freddy's staff

I think that makes sense too. A world of experience, an X's and O's guy, a return to the style of play that made Hilton rock. Johnny wanted him to take over the head spot when he left, so he's obviously well thought of.

Plus, Freddy obviously knows him.

Alot of people (including myself) really felt that Jim was doing most of the coaching anyway the final couple of years under Johnny. Seemed like he ran most of the timeouts and such.

But didn't he pretty much get out of coaching after he didn't get the ISU job? So he's been out for 15-16 years?

Reggie Theus

People focusing on Hoiberg's lack of coaching experience, take a look at what Reggie Theus did at New Mexico State before leaving for the Sacramento Kings. I don't believe Theus had any coaching experience prior to taking that job.

Why don't we give this a chance and see what happens. While initially concerned about a lack of experience. In the press conference he came across as very prepared with a plan.

Whats the worst that could happen? Finish at the bottom of the Big 12, AGAIN ?

Not true, Reggie was the head coach of the successful team in the NBC hit series Hang Time (succeeded by **** Butkus).

Re: Reggie Theus

I intially clicked on this thinking we were thinking the same thing. ISU should throw money at him to be the assistant to Freddy. They have to know each other pretty well. Not sure if he'd be willing, but it's worth a try.

Re: Reggie Theus

Did Matt Painter at Purdue have any head coaching exp before taking the Purdue HC job? I don't think he did.

Re: Reggie Theus

Prior performance is the best indicator of someone's ability to excel in their next position. This does not mean it has to be the same position. The skills it takes to succeed in a job go beyond merely the job Description of primary skills. The most important aspect of a Head Coach is Leadership Ability and Teaching. Both things that Fred has shown he is excellent at. See the Corey Brewer anecdote. He will have a lot to learn, it will take him a year to be comfortable, but he has been in and around BB all of his life so it is no stretch.

And, this is a weak argument, but can it get worse than what we have seen? Can he get outcoached more than GMac? I am doubtful.

Re: Reggie Theus

I didn't have any coaching experience either before I coached my sons 4 year-old blast ball team last year. Of course only 3 of the 6 kids showed up for the last game but nobody from the other team showed up so win by forfeit.

That's probably not a very good example.

He was HC at Southern Ill, I believe. He was hired by Gene Keady at Purdue with the expectation he would succeed Keady when he retired.

Correct. He was the head coach at Southern Illinois for one year - after Weber went to Illinois - and led them to some spectacular record.

Purdue hired him as an assistant waiting-in-the-wings for one year, then he took over the following year when Combover Keady retired.

Terry Carroll?

Saw his name mentioned in the John Wilkins thread...I think he would be a phenomenal hire for one of the assistants.

Not sure he'd be interested since he's got the gig at SCC and he's been an assistant once at ISU but the dude can coach and has head coaching experience.

If we want to get an "in" to Chicago recuits hire this guy

Tracey Webster, heck of a recruiter who is very close to Chicago high school and AAU coaches. Coached at Illinois, Kentucky, and DePaul.

I think a guy like Webster would be great for an assistant hire.

Trust me you don't want this guy. He's always looking for a way to help himself out. While at Illinois he was recruiting Darius Miller and Deandre Liggins, both whom ended up committing to Kentucky once Webster took an assistant job at Kentucky.

Webster would not fit in at Iowa State.

He was the interim head coach for DePaul this year. I think that would be awesome.
