Which QB would you choose for your starter in 2009?

Arnaud
Stats Overview Passing

YEAR CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT
2007 20 37 267 54.1 7.22 51 0 1 2 109.26
2008 247 401 2792 61.6 6.96 54 15 10 17 127.44

Stanzi
2007 0 4 0 0.0 0.00 0 0 1 0 -50.00
2008 150 254 1956 59.1 7.70 59 14 9 22 134.85

While Stanzi won more games, he had the benefit of a stronger OL and more sound coaching.

This is a real discussion?

AA every day, twice on Sunday, three times on gameday.

Better arm, better field vision, better athletic ability, better stats, better skill players around him.

Last year's defense is the only reason this could possibly be a discussion.

QB-------CMP--ATT-----YDS----CMP%---YPA---LNG---TD---INT---SACK---RAT
Arnaud---247---401-----2792---61.6-----6.96---54----15---10---17---127.44

This may seem like as stupid debate, but I actually had a coworker tell me that Stanzi was better. There is no comparison, Arnaud is better, Stanzi had more to work with.

Arnaud had a coaching staff that couldn't make up their mind on how they wanted to coach offense, had to split time at the beginning of the season, suffered through a shoulder injury, had to deal with a young receiving corp that dropped way to many passes, and still was only 200 yards short of 3000. Stanzi had more to work with and had a running threat to take the pressure off him. Head to head stats along, speak for themselves.

Why not ask this question, which QB has a better chance at making the pros? Stanzi wouldn't even be considered, Arnaud (baring injury), will surpass 3000 yards this season. He will at least get a look.

I also think that if Iowa's running game dries up, Stanzi will struggle.

most run their life according to their significance..... I hope the same for this one!

Looking at the stats it seems pretty close for 2008. Then once you look at the olines and who is lined up behind them you realize that Arnaud did that with a lot less help. I will be interested to see how Stanzi does when defenses don't have to put 8 in the box to stop the running game.

Next year we should be running a completely different offense than what Iowa will put on the field so it's going to be hard to see who did better. I don't think stanzi would do well in our offense but I don't really know how Arnaud would do in theirs.

Arnaud had the handicap of a coaching change that forced him to learn a brand new offense part way through his college career.

Stanzi stats look ok only because he had a better team around him and the offense featured a running back, not the passing game. Arnaud has a stronger and more accurate arm, runs better, and has a ton more athletic ability. Plus he knows how to find a barber shop.

I wouldn't expect ISU fans to pick Stanzi. Why should they? AA is solid.

That being said, I'm sticking with Stanzi. Why? Because as they ear progressed, he got sooooo much better. He lead the team on an incredible game winning drive against Penn State, rallied the team from a 12 point 4th quarter defecit at Illinois, and completetly shredded the defenses of Minnesota and South Carolina to end the season. While yes, his OL was better (thanks again Monty, for admitting this :) ), and Iowa's offense features the running game over the passing game, I think Stanzi is the exact type of QB to fit Iowa's style of play.

Plus, he has a better QB rating.

Yes i will admit he did lead them well late in the drive but you have to remember he threw an awful pass on a 3rd and long and got bailed out by a pass interference call. Pass probly wouldve been incomplete if the Penn State player simply swatted it.

Hands down... it's AA.

I think any Hawkeye fan would immediately trade Stanzi for AA straight up. If they say they wouldn't... they're either lying or they don't understand the game.

With that said, Stanzi is really all that Iowa needs at the QB position to be succesful in their style of play. Iowa runs the ball, and stops the run on defense... that's what they do. As long as they can run the ball, Stanzi will be all they need for a QB.

ISU on the other hand is going to depend VERY heavily on the QB position for their success. AA is going to account for a TON of our offense. AA will HAVE to throw for 3000+ yards for ISU to have any success at all. Iowa can be succesful if Stanzi throws for just 2000.

So, in a sense, we're comparing apples to oranges. A dual threat passing QB to a pro style dropback QB. Although I still think AA would be better in both styles.

While I'm an Iowa State fan, and have high hopes for AA, not sure how anyone could say this is a slam dunk, or stupid comparison. Would you rather have Freeman or Reesing? I'd take Reesing cause he's a winner. AA needs to show he can win at Iowa State. I believe he will.

The pass would have been incomplete either way, by Scirotto decided to hit Stross before the ball got there...easy call.

You must be forgetting the other three 3rd down conversions that Stanzi completed on that drive, after the PI.

I'd take Freeman over Reesing IF physical tools were all that mattered. But it isn't all that matters -- Freeman brings immaturity and attitude problems that make him undesireable. I have never seen any evidence that this is an issue with Arnaud.

When you look at the stats one should consider that Iowa was in almost exclusively close games while the Iowa State defense constructed a superhighway in the middle of the field leading to quite a few blowouts. Arnaud might find things a little more difficult if Iowa State stays in some games this year.

How can you not like AA more? He has a stronger arm, is more accurate, and he is big enough that he could punch it a yard or two up the middle to get a first down/touchdown (I still don't get why we never did that last year :skeptical:)
