Arnaud or Meyer in 2007?

Arnaud is not quite ready yet, he is close, but he isn't going to be co-starter or anything, he will be Bret's backup who comes in for cleanup duty or if we are getting our asses kicked. He will see time for sure, but it isn't like Bret is going to get pulled for Austen, I don't think, Bret is quite a bit ahead of Austen. Austen has great accuracy, but prolly has to work on the longball and some other things, he will be good, but next year not this year unless he has to step in because Bret is hurt or something

Nah. give Arnaud one more year to learn Chizik's system. Arnaud's gonna tear up the conference next season with the sked we have...

i don't think this is really even a relevant question. Assumbing Bret stays healthy, he will be the QB in 2007.

I don't think it's a question of Brett being the main man (as senior who has started a ton of games, he better be) but rather how much does Arnaud play? I will be very disappointed if he doesn't play the entire 4th quarter against Kent.

Well, don't just overlook Philip Bates just yet. You gotta throw him into the mix as well for a little bit of PT. He is just a more athletic version of Bret Meyer and Austen Arnaud, but with less passing skills and experience.

Gene was tooting about Phillip Bates in Council Bluffs Tailgater. Thought he was big time. Of course, the tailgater was near his hometown.

One guy is an (almost) three year starter, the other has yet to take a collegiate snap.

Shouldn't really be much of an issue.

We've got a guy who's a possible late 1st round-early 2nd round pick...Arnaud might see a few snaps during garbage time but that's going to be it.

I don't know who the first guy you are talking about is. Blythe?

I was thinking he meant Meyer, but wasn't sure. I don't think there's a doubt Bret can play his way into the NFL draft with a good season, but he better light the world on fire if he's going day 1.

For all that Meyer did for himself during his sophomore year, he erased a lot of it last year with the subtraction of the deep ball and the disappearance of his legs.

I'd expect Bates to redshirt this yr. Why waste a yr of playing time when he'd only see limited time on the field?

I would agree, unless he could seriously play spot duty on defense. Otherwise, there's no reason to have him waste a year with two talented guys ahead of him. Plus if something happened, you can always pull that redshirt off and send him to the dogs.

Great point. I had to hold my breath last year that Arnaud's red shirt wasn't burned in some meaningless game. And regarding playing Arnaud over Meyer this year, do you really think it would turn out any better than Meyer did his freshman season. Arnaud will likely be a solid Big 12 QB, but unless he's the second coming of Seneca Wallace he won't be better than a 5th year senior who will likely set atop the record book in several categories by the end of the season.

McCarney did that a few years back in a game against Kansas that meant absolutely nothing. I can't remember if Doxzon got hurt and he put Bandauer in when he was redshirting. This was late in the season, too.

Last year in the Big 12 Conference, Meyer finished 10th in quarterback eff. rating, 6th in completions, 7th in passing yardage, 9th in completion percentage, 9th in TDs, 2nd in most interceptions and first in most sacks.
He'll have to improve considerably to be ranked statistically in the top half of the conference this year.

Before Meyer is a 1st or 2nd round pick he is going to have to regain confidence in the offensive line. The way things went last year I think 1st or 2nd round might be a tad high. I see no reason why they couldn't use some kind of platoon system if Arnoud is just better in certain situations. But you would have to agree that Bret is the man in 07
