Arlen/Yackley to Transfer

Disagree slightly. While BF is an outstanding coach with a terrific record - there are nonetheless elements of his personality/style that are not universally admired by players, parents and fans.

And with this thread reaching ten pages, I think we've covered that more than is necessary.

I didn't say what level, or where she coaches. I'm sure with your spreadsheet you can come up with the name, but I think it best that we not.

Agreed.

Absolutely true. Impossible to link as this was in a private conversation with me.

BF is not the coach of Iowa State to be universally liked and admired by his players. He is here to make them the best players they can be and to WIN basketball games. Some young women probably just aren't mentally tough enough for Division 1 basketball and that is ok. We don't want those players wearing the Cyclone uniform. Guess what? Some of these ladies are going to go out into the real world after basketball and be grateful for BF. They will be mentally tough enough to deal with the pressures of their jobs and families.

Maybe you shouldn't have brought up the quote then?

Maybe. I typed it and thought about it hard for about 10 minutes before posting.

I suggest some of you read post #110 carefully, focusing on the words - intimidation, fear, and scared. This is from somone who knows firsthand - and many can substantiate her experience.

Where is this different from any other Div 1 school that have high expectations? Again....I wish the girls well....but good luck in finding a quality coach that does not take a hard line.

Big 12 basketball will not fit everyone ofBF recruits and what it takes to succeed at that level.....and I wish them well.

This thread reminds me of a professor I once had in grad school. First day of class he told us he is blamed for the lack of 4.0s in the program, but many of his students come back to thank him for being so hard and that his class was the one most helpful in true life.

I worked my rear off trying to get that A, and got an A-, cost me my 4.0, but now I look back and he was right. I got more out of his class that has aided me in my career and in life than the others.

I was pretty upset at the time, but alas, if it hadn't been so hard, I wouldn't have applied myself to learn so much.

Of course, just as often these professors are just full of themselves:skeptical:. Glad you got one of the good ones, just as I believe the girls on the basketball team have.

Hopefully Shellie Mosman gets some playing time next year. She is my alltime favorite Cyclone!!. I hope that we can bring in more student athletes like her that are so unselfish and team oriented. What a fabulous role model, student athlete, and basketball player. Shellie my whole family loves you. You are No. 1 our book.

What I have seen and heard over the last 11 years goes WAY beyond pushing players. Many of you have seen and commented on the WHO-TV video of BF screaming at Nicky two inches from her face. That is not an isolated incident. Let's just say that adoration from former players is far from universal. If I had a child playing for BF, and he spoke to her the way I have heard him speak to current and former players, one of us would have to be carried out of the building. And I say this as a coach who has worked with female high school athletes for twenty years.

While I think Bill could be an even more effective coach if he could soften his feedback sometimes, it's doubtful this leopard will be changing his spots anytime soon. I remain a fan, and am sure they will field a competitive team next year and beyond.

As Iowa Sports Connection states, "I need to remind the entire state how fortunate we are to have a coach that exudes class and integrity in Bill Fennelly. Bill coaches young ladies on winning on the court and in life, and may be intense, but that's the world today and through tough love, he prepares each one of them for their lives beyond the friendly confines of Hilton."
