Arlen/Yackley to Transfer

Article on Yackley's transfer:

Former Sully Buttes star Yackley leaving Iowa State | argusleader.com | Argus Leader

Yackley, the 2008 Argus Leader girls basketball player of the year, said she hasn't decided on a new college but added that she would like to come back to South Dakota.

"That would be nice," Yackley said about playing closer to home. "It definitely wasn't a reason why I left, but now this time around I can get back into the state."

Yackley said the University of South Dakota is high on her list and that Augustana is a possibility. She said South Dakota State, which didn't aggressively pursue her in high school, was less of an option.
----------------------------
"I just felt like Iowa State wasn't the right fit for me," said Yackley, who added she is leaving for personal reasons. "It didn't really have anything to do with playing time."

Since I was the one who made the earlier post I should probably chime in here. Each players' decision is certainly unique and complex, consisting of core issues and peripheral ones. Clearly, one of the core issues is that BF is a difficult coach to play for. Some earlier posters referred to him 'pushing' players, and inferred that maybe they couldn't take it.

What I have seen and heard over the last 11 years goes WAY beyond pushing players. Many of you have seen and commented on the WHO-TV video of BF screaming at Nicky two inches from her face. That is not an isolated incident. Let's just say that adoration from former players is far from universal. If I had a child playing for BF, and he spoke to her the way I have heard him speak to current and former players, one of us would have to be carried out of the building. And I say this as a coach who has worked with female high school athletes for twenty years.

It is also clear that one of the peripheral issues for Arlen was her(evidently intense) dislike for plane travel. You can pick this up from one of her CyberCy'd blogs this year.

I am also aware that one of the peripherals for Yackley was homesickness, which is unfortunate, but something that some kids never fully deal with.

While I think Bill could be an even more effective coach if he could soften his feedback sometimes, it's doubtful this leopard will be changing his spots anytime soon. I remain a fan, and am sure they will field a competitive team next year and beyond.

or the girls may be too soft. I wish them well....

Two things to consider that haven't been brought up. One would be serious relationships/boyfriends, and another would be the position coach, which is in some ways as important as the head coach. Its hard for us, we prefer to have players to cheer for the full 4 years, but life happens. They shouldn't say "playing time" when it obviously isn't that, it just makes people wonder all the more. Good luck to everyone!

Or - you may have NO idea what I have heard. We sit less than 15 feet from the bench.

actually....I sit perhaps 20 feet away at times....

I will take Bill's rep/history over a couple of Freshman girls any day of the week.

keep looking for excuses for them.

Again...I wish them well.

I do, as I'm friends with a lot of the basketball players and hear all the good, bad, and ugly that comes of it. I had coaches say much harsher things to me in high school, and while they may have been harsh, it was because those coaches knew I could be better. I'm not going to name names but we have some ladies who need to learn how to take criticism. Some of them, as soon as things don't work out the way they want, their first reaction is to give up. Or if someone gets on them, they think that person hates them. They've never faced adversity because most of them have always been the best player at their level before college sports.

This is correct.

If people think BF is bad, just try playing for Pat or Geno.

My guess Arlen's reasons are more travel/school/life balance issues.

Instead of focusing on who is leaving, we should focus on who is staying. Frankly, the one I was most worried about leaving was Whitney Williams, but she seems to be giving it her all and growing through the challenges and criticism.

For anyone on this thread to infer that they have even the slightest idea of the "adversity" that any of the ISU women have been through is an idiot! Until you are recruited as an ISU women's basketball player and "witness" everything that occurs-you know-the good, the bad, and the ugly- keep your thoughts to yourself about things you have no clue about. This isn't the first time ISU has had transferring athletes, and it won't be the last time! My guess is the only reason the "playing time" issue is ever in the talking venue, is because it is an "easy" out for all to see and express their opinion on! The recruits coming in, just as the recruits leaving will all have to make their way in life. I can't figure out why some on this forum believe that leaving is the "easy" way out for a kid! Especially when they engrain themselves so much in the Ames community. So for anyone to think it is an "easy" way out, I will respectively disagree! Wishing every single young lady on the 2008-09 Elite Eight nothing but the best!! May life continue to get better each and everyday! Go Cyclones!

Geno I agree with - he may be the most arrogant, insensitive person in the country.

I have seen many documentaries on Pat, including all access HBO programs with no language censorship. I have never heard anything from her remotely as denigrating or profane as I have heard from BF.

Somebody needs to calm down. I guarantee you there are people with information from the inside. Like people who play on the scout team. Or how about people who date the girls. Or how about the people who eat with them. Or how about the people who text them and comfort them when they're upset. I'd love to see you say I have no clue, because that just shows that you really don't have a clue.

I know many of these girls on a personal level, so I don't appreciate you inferring that I don't have a clue what I'm talking about. I didn't name a single name when describing some things our girls are faced with. I also know they read this board, and that most of them wouldn't disagree with anything I've said so far. Those weren't my "thoughts", those were the "facts."

Also, for the record, I never once blamed these girls for transferring. They have a right and desire to be happy, and if that isn't here, they need to move on. To expect them to suffer at our expense so we can have a good basketball team is unfair to them. They're all great girls to hang around, and I wish them the best of luck wherever their path takes them.

Did you sit 15 feet away from her at a game, too? Or are you basing it solely on a time when she knew she was being recorded?

I do agree with this part of the post. It's human nature to try to assign blame or reasoning to everything, but at this point it's more productive to look at who we have going forward. I know more than a few non-athletes who transferred colleges for one reason or another and nobody thought twice about it. Why should it be different for athletes? Particularly athletes in a sport where there aren't big $$$ at the end of the rainbow (so chasing after the money can't possibly be a reason for transferring)?

Fair point. I have not had the access to her I have had to BF for 11 years.

But she was filmed through many highly stressful - 'heat-of-the-moment' situations. But you are correct in your assumption.

I doubt it; Ashley is very serious about basketball. I think we should resist the urge to assume that female athletes are less committed to their sports than males, and that when they quit a team, it has to do with something outside of their sport...
