***Arizona State Preview/Prediction/Results***

The #18 Cyclones (7-3) are down in Tempe this weekend to take on the unranked Arizona State Sun Devils (6-5). The first big thing I'm looking for this week is for the team to remember that they are, in actual fact, allowed to score points in the first period and recent rule changes also permit them to attempt to win their match by more than 2 points. The second big thing is the 184 match. Arizona State has their only ranked wrestler at that weight so Saturday is Beard's for real last chance to keep his spot in the lineup. Based on his performance last weekend at Grand View I am reasonably confident Beard is going to take advantage of the opportunity.

Match-by-match thoughts
125: Hall and Carpio have two mutual opponents and both picked up a pair of wins in those matches. But Carpio has multiple losses to unranked guys, compared to Hall's single early season loss to a guy who wasn't ranked. So even though Carpio has a better record I look for Hall to pick up a decent 4-5 point win here. Really I just want to see the unstoppable offense that Hall showed glimpses of in December show up again. At this point Hall's season is stagnating and a dominant win here would give him a head of steam going into his rematch with Peters next week.
Iowa State 3 - 0 Arizona State

133: Arizona State is very bad at 133. As in "only 1 win the whole season against D-1 competition" bad. I look for Shayden to get his offense going early and often to pick up an easy win.
Iowa State 6 - 0 Arizona State

141: Kraus beat Goettl last season and is one of ASU's better wrestlers. In a tournament setting I'd give this one to Moreno. But in duals Moreno seems to have a lot of trouble with the short post weigh-in recovery time. So I'm going to call this one a toss up with Kraus being slightly favored.
Iowa State 6 - 3 Arizona State

149: Goettl has two wins over guys who have beaten McCalmon and I'm sure Goettl will be fired up to wrestle in his home state. I look for him to press the action and go for a major against an overmatched wrestler from ASU.
Iowa State 9 - 3 Arizona State

157: Smith beat Molina handily last season and neither Nicholson nor Molina are showing themselves to be much better this year than Molina was last year. I don't see us picking up a win at this weight.
Iowa State 9 - 6 Arizona State

165: Rex has not given up bonus points in a single match this season. I'd like to see Moreno change that.
Iowa State 12 - 6 Arizona State

174: Waters is a pinner so Weatherman will need to make sure he doesn't get out of position, but beyond that I don't see any reason Weatherman shouldn't roll to an easy win here.
Iowa State 15 - 6 Arizona State

184: Stauffer is ASU's best wrestler and is also the last ranked but not AA caliber guy on the schedule at 184. A win here is very important because it is the best chance to get into the rankings for the last month of the season. Beard showed signs of life last weekend at the Grandview Open but Stauffer is a better wrestler than what he faced there. Stauffer has a pin over Chaid of Oklahoma and has split two matches with Boyd of Oklahoma State. I don't really care what the score is in this one as long as Beard wins.
Iowa State 18 - 6 Arizona State

197: After Gadson's disapointing outing last week I hope we don't see another 3-1 off a late takedown type match. Kyven is an All American and has earned the #2 ranking in the country. I'd like to see him act like it and get bonus points here.
Iowa State 22 - 6 Arizona State

HWT: Eskram has a middling record this season but while Quean has made great strides in his defense his offense is still lacking. I'd love to see him actually score a takedown or two but I have a feeling this is going to be a similar match to what we saw last week.

Have a bad gut feeling something is going on with Dakota. Hope everything is well.

Really hoping Earl wrestles here. I believe Larson can get the win, but would like to see earl get it rolling before facing pete.

I think 141, 149, 157, 184 all are must wins at Arizona State to give themselves a chance to earn an auto bids.
I think 133 and Hwt will have to steal a bid anyway.
I think 125, 165, 174, 197 can suffer upsets and still be okay. Maybe not 125, but others could
 
133 is going to have to steal a spot but is in a good position to do so. The Big XII will likely get 3 spots at 133 so Shayden/Dakota will only need to beat Pennesi of West Virginia, who beat Dakota 4-2 in November, in the third place match. Not a given by any means, but very doable.

Little Moreno has a lot to gain by closing out the season strong because if he does it is possible that the Big XII will get in all four guys at 141. Meaning the only thing that could keep him out of NCAAs would be missing weight.

Pennesi is very good when healthy. He has been struggling lately losing 4 of last 5. I hope he at least keeps his auto bid and doesn't lose it. Morrison and Brewer are a lot tougher nut to crack
 
I agree at 141, if Gabe can finish strong it is possible. Johnston of WV is also a fringe qualifier I think but beatable.

All those losses were prior to the coaches panel coming out so he should be okay. WVU has six duals left and he'll get the #2, #8, #17, and #28 guys in the panel plus two non ranked guys. As long as he beats the two unranked guys and the guy from Clarion (#28) he should keep his ranking. But his record will be below .700 so hopefully his RPI will be high enough to merit a pre-qualifier allocation. If Pennesi doesn't get an allocation then we've got almost zero chance of stealing a spot at 133.

I'm really not sure about Hall. Take away his win against the Air Force kid at the Scuffle and his season suddenly looks a lot different - his next best wins are against the guys ranked 24th, 27th, 30th, and 33rd in the coaches panel. He's had a lot of chances against 13-20 ranked guys and not come through with a win once. I don't see just one or two bad losses dropping him far and fast. I'm more worried about what his RPI looks like, since he's going to need a good RPI to get an allocation given his sub .700 record.

I really want to see him dominate tomorrow because I want to be able to feel confident that he'll be able to get takedowns in his rematch with Peters next week.

Ok, so forgive me for asking, but I am new to Cyclone Fanatic. Can someone tell me what is going on with the wrestling program? I don't follow wrestling like I do football or basketball, and I know when Sanderson left a bunch of guys left with him, but is the program on the upswing? Is Kevin Jackson the right guy for the program. Like I said, I don't follow it closely enough but I know when Sanderson was there ISU was top five and now they are barely top 20. Can the program get back there?
 
Hall didn't have any trouble taking down Peters at the Cliff Keen he was rolling to an easy victory when Peters got him with a cow catcher and the fall about half-way through the third period.....I think he can win this one if he is careful.

Oh yeah, I agree. What worries me is that since Cliff Keene Hall has only scored more than five points one time (twice if you count the pin he got at the Scuffle), and has multiple matches where he doesn't have any takedowns at all. He has shown he can explode with a takedown clinic against some pretty good wrestlers, but he hasn't been doing that much in the past two months. So I'd feel a lot more comfortable that his Cliff Keen showing wasn't a fluke if he went out there tonight and put on a clinic.
 
For the video tonight I can't tell if you have to have the Pac-12 Network from your TV provider to watch it. I don't get the Pac-12 network and some of the videos I click on work no problem, others ask me to verify my provider ala ESPN3.
 
I hate the live blog (wish I could watch all of these). Rather read your takes, right here, Judoka (have to give buf some credit too). Carry on, my good man.
 
They are starting at 149. Kind of wish they would have started at 157 and finished there for Goettl. The extra time will be good for little Moreno though.
 
Goettl gets an early takedown and rides the ASU guy for almost the full three minutes. Goettl gets called for stalling near the end. A fair call. Goettl isn't working too hard for a pin right now. Up 2-0 after one period with a whole lot of RT.
