Arizona does NOT hire Tim Floyd

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

This is not a surprise and good for Tim. I thought the Memphis rumors were a little silly - he and Bev are not Memphis type people.

All of you bashers out there, are you really being honest with yourselves? How many people would not jump ship at the thought of a major increase in salary.

Heck I think I am pretty loyal, but if somebody comes calling with an offer of 30%+ raise I'm listening.

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

A few musings:

Calipari stayed quite a while at both UMass (8 years I believe) and Memphis (9 years I believe)...those are pretty long hauls in the coaching profession...Orr was only at ISU 14 years, Spurrier only at Florida 12 years. Obviously, Floyd is much less committed than Calipari.

USC is a FB school...they do not care about BB. And furthermore, any BB fans are focused on either UCLA or the Lakers out there.

I love how everybody bestows the moniker of "great coach" on Floyd. He has never coached any team past the Sweet 16. Great coaches can do better than that. He is certainly a good coach...maybe even very good...but not great.

USC has been singled out by the NCAA for being very close to some serious trouble with the APR in MBB...potentially in line to lose DI status in all sports...can you imaging the stuff hitting the fan if that were to happen?!?

I don't think that the NCAA will let that happen to one of their top "Money" programs. Yes they may use a lowly BCS program like ISU as an example to pretend to have a moral and ethical stance but NCAA is all about the money.

I know many ISU fans like to "play the martyr".

However, the NCAA has given us a pass on the APR..."(Iowa State men's basketball program will avoid scholarship losses after receiving a waiver because several players left after a head coaching change.)"

NCAA Penalties for Low Graduation Rates to Rise - washingtonpost.com

I was wrong about USC...the next step is losing post season play..."Southern California lost two scholarships and was warned that sustained underperformance would put them on track to being banned from future postseason play." The next step after losing postseason play is getting kicked out of DI for all sports as I understand it.

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

I think this is a good hire for U of A. But the Wildcat fans seem a little disappointed. When they started the search the question among Wildcat fans was whether they should hire Tom Izzo or Rick Pitino. I think they have an inflated sense of where the program is. Don't get me wrong, it's a good program, and certainly a step up for Floyd from USC. But they weren't going to get a big name like Izzo or Pitino. (Personally I was surprised Mark Few wasn't interested. He seemed like the perfect fit.)

If they were thinking Pitino and Izzo then, yes, they sure will be disappointed with Floyd. Pitino and Izzo not only have multiple Final Fours...both have won the National Championship. Floyd, as I have previously said, has never made it past the Sweet 16. Pitino and Izzo are far superior to Floyd.

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

I have said it over and over on this site. Tim Floyd is by far the most overrated coach out there.

He had some good seasons at ISU. Thanks to Johnny Orr leaving him a lot of talent and him being able to bring Dedric w/ him from NO. Then of course he had some bad seasons.

He was a brutal NBA coach. Yeah the Bulls job was a job where he was doomed to fail from day one but he stunk w/ the Hornets as well.

Than at USC. The guy recruits top 10 to 20 classes and puts together average PAC 10 teams.

Give the guy credit though, he leaves a school before they realize that he really isn't that good of a coach. He keeps fans thinking he is this elite coach by always moving from school to school. He is a poor mans Larry Brown

You could argue that taking ISU and USC to the sweet 16 is equal to Kentucky and Michigan State being in the final 4 as far as coaching accomplishment. That ISU has only gone deeper in the NCAAs one time ever.

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

On a Tim Floyd side note – Dude comb your hair! Every time I watched a USC game this year or saw him on t.v. he looked like he just crawled out of bed. Tim – you were in SoCal and now on your way to replacing one of the game’s most perfectly styled men in Lute Olson. Gel up!!!

A very poor man's Larry Brown! Larry Brown has won a championship in both the NCAA and the NBA.

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

maybe USC will hire our great outstanding coach griggy mcdermott stein.

Re: Arizona hires Tim Floyd

Saying he never made it past the Regional semis is kind of weak in reference to his lack of being a great coach. In 96 we played a really good game against a very good Utah team with Keith Van Horn and that other center (can't remember his name), and in 97 we lost by 1 lousy point at the end to UCLA. I don't fault Floyd's coaching ability in those games, we made it that far because of his coaching. I wouldn't hold his 10 seed USC team losing to the #2 seed in the Sweet 16 against him either.

We were up 16 in the second half against UCLA

We weren't going to beat Utah that year but if I remember correctly, KVH was terribly sick that game.

USC got destroyed by Kansas St last year.

This year they were terrible until he pulled a Steve Alford and won the conference tourney

I couldn't remember the number but I was in the Alamo Dome for that epic melt down. We should have won that game.
