Are you a coffee snob?

Coffee snob? Now that I sort of am. While I don't know anything about coffee and don't know if what I am drinking is actually "better", I know what I like. I can never go wrong with Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts (dark roasts), and there are a few more that I have tried and liked but can't remember the names.

I do NOT like Folgers or coffees that you can see through. I will drink them, however, if I must. Most hotels, for example, have pretty weak, crappy coffee. IMO.

Oh, and I also don't put anything in my coffee. Black, always.

Anyone know of any other good coffees?

Honestly, it's usually not the brand, it's the person making it that causes the problem. Granted, some coffees are just bad taste wise, but for the most part, I can make anything taste decent, it's a matter of the right amount of grounds to good water. There are brands I prefer, but as long as it tastes like coffee, I'm usually happy.

I actually used to dread trying to find a cup of coffee in Iowa that was even half way worth a crap. I prefer a little cream in my coffee, but when I was in Iowa, no matter where I stopped if I even added one of the tiny single cups of half and half to a 20 oz. coffee, it tasted like half and half and would lose all sense of ever having any coffee flvor at all.

It's probably been about 8 years since I even bought a cup of coffee in Iowa. I usually just go for the orange juice when I'm on the road and then make a large cup my way at my parents before I head out to drive home.

Maybe if you buy it at McDonald's.

Actually the McDonald's by my house makes a darn fine cup of coffee. I think they get so many people buying it there, it never sits and burns on the warmer. It's the Starbuck's by my house that always taste like they over roasted the beans by about 2 days.

I do agree with this part. My in-laws make VERY weak coffee. Not even sure what they use. But I threw in the folgers because no matter how much I seemed to use, the bold flavor just wasn't there.

But you are right. Hotels and such are trying not to give away the farm, and thus use less grounds. Their "dark" is see-through. Comical in some places.

I would be a coffee snob if I live in the Pacific Northwest, they have some awesome brews up there.

Strange enough the best quick brew coffee I've had in the Des Moines area is at Prairie Meadows. Great stuff.

I developed my coffee habit while being a member of Uncle Sam's drunk canoe club. We use to make something we called death chud. If I have to, I can drink what is available.

I prefer my coffee strong, black, and very bold. My favorite is a good Sumatra dark roast. Fruity berry-like aroma with a slight bitter taste but not too bitter.

Starbucks can get expensive. I have found that Folgers Black Silk is ok for everyday consumption. The trick is to use a half cup of coffee grinds for a 10-12 cup pot. It tastes terrible if you make it too weak.

Buy a good whitening toothpaste because the oils in the coffee leaves a heavy stain.

I think we just bought the Sumatra from Starbucks at the store the other day. Never had it before.

I agree whole heartedly with this. My last job we had a fight over who made the coffee to the point where we started labeling pots to distinguish who made it(even though you could tell just by holding it up to the light.) We used the same coffee, same water, but if not done properly, you come up with a nice batch of hot, dirty water.

I have this same problem every weekend at my in-laws' lake house. Of course, it's their lake house so I can't complain but the coffee is like coffee-flavored water. And they drink it 24 hours a day. 100 degrees out at 4pm... anybody want some coffee? I try to get up before them to make it myself but they get up at some ungodly hour. I have no idea what time because I've never been able to get up that early.

Ha, I hear ya. It's crazy how some people can drink coffee ALL day. I can drink it until about 11am, but that is pushing it.

I'll drink damn near any kind of coffee. I will say that I don't like Starbucks coffee though.

My wife and I started drinking Gevalia House Blend medium/dark and We both really like it. I'm also a dark coffee drinker and this has a very good flavor. It's actually pretty similar to Pike's Place from Starbucks, but it's a buck or two cheaper. At least it is at the local Target. I would highly recommend it.

I live in Oskaloosa, so I go to the one on the square in town... There are other locations in central/southeastern Iowa as well.

Very interesting that a place advertising their good coffee should include in their logo a percolator, which is pretty widely recognized as one of the worst ways to brew quality coffee.

I'm a coffee snob like I'm a beer snob; I don't refuse to drink the low-end stuff, but will almost always opt for higher quality. My preference is to buy whole beans, grind them myself (coarsely), and brew them in a french press. For greater convenience, I either make coffee using a Bunn auto drip, or grab some at a coffee shop. Independent coffee shops often have "pour over" coffee, which is a great alternative to the electronic pots (Stomping Grounds makes pour over coffee, or at least used to when I was in school). For chains, Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts are both great, but my favorite is a place called Saxby's. They're mostly on the east coast, but apparently have locations in Tejas and Nevada, also.
