He is not coaching against Michigan today due to another seizure this morning. Gotta wonder if he should retire for his own health. I'm sure there are people who know more about it than I do, is there a chance he'd retire or are these seizures not life threatening? If he does retire, you'd think we have a decent shot at flipping Jones and Elmore to ISU right?

I don't know if it's even for his own health, as much as the health of his team. I know it sucks to say, because it's not his fault, but this has to be detrimental to the team wondering about the health of your coach and weather or not he'll be there for the game. There does come a point where maybe you say, "For the benefit of everyone involved, it's time to hang it up."

I think I saw that he has 5 seizures on gameday since 2011. Maybe the stress of a gameday makes him more prone to these? I guess I don't know how many he has had total over the last few years. Sad stuff

Jerry Kill - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kill suffered a series of seizures, including one on the sidelines in the waning seconds of a home loss to Illinois State on October 15, 2005.[SUP][23][/SUP] Subsequently, Kill was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which is now in remission. Kill has since started the Coach Kill Cancer Fund foundation to assist low-income southern Illinois residents with treatment.[SUP][24][/SUP]

On September 11, 2010, Kill was hospitalized for dehydration hours after a 23–17 win over North Dakota [SUP][25][/SUP] One year later, on September 10, 2011, Kill was rushed to the hospital after suffering yet another seizure and collapsing on the sidelines, this time during the final seconds of Minnesota's loss to New Mexico State.[SUP][26][/SUP] On September 25, 2011, Kill was admitted to the Mayo Clinic after suffering another seizure.[SUP][27][/SUP] On October 13, 2012, he suffered a minor seizure after a Minnesota-Northwestern game and was released the following day.[SUP][28][/SUP][SUP][29][/SUP] Kill missed the entire 2nd half of the Michigan State game on November 24 due to suffering another seizure at halftime. During the home win on September 14, 2013 against Western Illinois University, he suffered a seizure, just before halftime; he missed the entire second half of the game.

Anyone know more about the condition? 6 on gamedays seems crazy. Do they only happen on gamedays or is it just the stress of the day?

The stress of game day is what cause the seizures, which are not in the least bit life threatening. I will agree tho, it probably does hurt the team to have the constant seizure story line there, and that reason is probably why he WOULD retire, but he does not need to retire for the sake of his own health.

I don't think he'd want people to be sad for him, it's part of his life and he has to live with it, and coaching is also a part of his life

I completely agree, but until someone proves to me that it doesn't disrupt the team, there comes a point where you have to decide what's best for everyone, not just yourself. I don't care what anyone says, it doesn't do any good for a team to have this happening on a regular basis. The coach should be the rock you lean on. If Minny and the players are 100% behind him though, then so be it. Who am I to argue.

I think there's plenty of proof to argue it does affects the team. He didn't travel to Ann Arbor today, so he obviously wasn't performing his duties as a coach. Another coach then has to take his place and the entire staff gets stretched thinner because they have to cover for him.

I know this won't be a popular opinion, but I think it's time for UM to take a look at whether Kill is still a good fit for their program. I know they must have been aware of his condition when they hired him, but it's clearly an issue. It's affecting his job performance, I don't see how anyone could argue otherwise.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't imagine firing someone for known medical issues would fly very well.

Seems like a good coach and a good guy but its probably time to hang it up. Nothing he can do about it but probably time to retire.

The employer has to provide reasonable accommodations for someone's medical restrictions. Firing a head coach who suffers epilepsy just because of that condition would be a no-no. IANAL either, but I'd say that if they can document the pattern of it happening on game day, they could justify it. However, I hope the guy can get some treatment to stop it (I'd wish seizures on no one), or if he can't, he's allowed to finish the season and retire.

But then again, the goofers killed Jack Trice, so maybe they'll just fire him and get sued for all they're worth. eff 'em.

It sounds harsh but I imagine a coach like Urban Meyer would use it in negative recruiting... "Why go there? His health is going to cause him to step down before you finish your career." just like they used age with JoePa.

Of course, I doubt OSU and Minny fight for too many recruits...

No, but I bet Minny and MSU do, and Dantonio is slimy enough to use a tactic like that
