and pope is gone because...

RB coach is mainly a recruiter. And he doesn't just recruit RB's. What I think we need with a new RB coach is a good Texas recruiter.

I agree Curt re Texas recruiting, We need to mine er recruit texas for players that can help us, at least get into the top half of the conference.

We need to hire an RB's coach who is familiar with, and knows the texas high school coaches, and bring that talent up north to ISU.

Go Cyclones Beat the Panthers!

With Nebraska leaving the Big 12, I thought we should see an uptick on recruiting in Texas.

Seriously, I don't think Rhoads fired these guys lightly. When you see them at the CF Recruitment Day Party, they are are very cohesive unit that clearly enjoys being together. The level of personal relationship that these guys seem to have is pretty incredible for a career in which you move around so much.

However, something needed to happen and most of the arrows pointed toward Messingham. And I suspect that Rhoads already has a new OC in mind who will want to bring his own RB coach.
Really thought Woody would have had a bigger role in the red zone, but we did not solve line issues.

Thought White would be catching a lot more passes out of the backfield. Not sure why he did not play slot or something if he was not going to run much. Seems like a waste by the staff.

Thought Shontrelle would break more big runs. He did less dancing this year though.

Wimberly did fine as he sneaked through dinky holes. He needs to get more screen passes.

Neeley's light turned on last three games.

Still waiting for the prolific Standard to have a run.

Just did not think the rushing game was going to be so stagnated after the bravado pre season.

The oline looked much better (they looked like they had a plan) in the last few games.

Will never know why GR was not allowed to throw downfield more.

Were we bound and determined to rush for that one yard every time?

It might have if ISU had a TX recruiter who was better-connected with the TX HS coaches. As mentioned several times above, ISU didn't have that, so ISU was not able to realize much benefit on the TX recruiting front from NU leaving the Big 12.

I also thought our RBs improved very little over the past 3 seasons. And I cringed a LOT this season at the way our backs carried the ball. None of them had consistent ball security.

I agree, and I think Nebraska's Texas player numbers are going down fairly fast and their program with it. But we were down at the Missouri game two years ago and they had about 40 kids on their roster from Texas, and they still have close to that amount. Mizzou may have benefited some from NU bolting the conference, but we should be benefitting the most. Herman leaving likely hurt us in Texas so I hope one or both of our new coaches are heavily conncected there.

Re: Texas recruiting: We're all worried about Texas recruiting, the lack thereof, etc.....but the reality is: Since TCU and Baylor have joined the Big 12...our Texas recruiting has gone downhill...go onto the Rivals TCU and Baylor sites....check out their recent commits from Texas....and see how many of their commits WE also offered, and lost to them....then go check out OUR commits and see how many of our commits ALSO had TCU and Baylor offers....hardly ANY. I've talked to Curt Bray and Pope at some of the functions in past years, and they both say that if we're 'in' on a Texas guy we're ok...until he receives an offer from another in-state Texas school like UT, TT, Baylor, ....and now even TCU....and then he's gone! Why did we hire what's his name...the d-back coach....because he has ties to Florida...where it appears we've shifted our recruiting focus to...along with a shift eastward to Illinois...Indiana...(because we're no longer in a position to out-recruit schools like TCU and Baylor) C. Bray and Pope concentrated in Texas because we were able to lure potential TCU and Baylor guys up to the cold north back in the day...but now, that ain't the case. Therefore....K. Pope takes the fall...Best Wishes to him and family!

Ricky Williams could probably recruit Texas, and is coaching at powerhouse incarnate word college.

We had 6 recruits from Texas in 2013 and have 5 commits from Texas for 2014.
