Ames Living. Apartments?

A. Are you graduating from Iowa State? If yes, then you probably know enough about Ames to determine whether this is a good choice. If no, then you probably should spend some significant time in Ames and talking to people in Ames before you move.

B. Cheap is what you make it. It is more of a lifestyle question. And if you are an Iowa State student, use your networks now to try to find housing opportunities. If not, it will be much harder.

C. Again jobs are what you make them. There is always some kind of work in Ames. And with low unemployment, you should be able to find something in a field of interest, even more if you are willing to drive to DM.

Go Cyclones. Please tell us more about how someone growing up in Huskerland became such a big Iowa State fan.

I live in Omaha, go to school here, and have absolutely no connection to Iowa State. I naturally used to ask myself how on earth I became an Iowa State fan and why didn’t I pick an athletic department that could win. Then Hoiberg happened and now Campbell and I can see that I absolutely somehow someway made the right choice. Nebraska fans, especially when I was in elementary school were the absolute worst. Obviously Iowa State was winning 2-3 football games a year with no basketball to back it up yet. The pompous classmates that now attend UNL and get to witness their trash department lose in both relevant sports while we win BCS bowls is incredible. But growing up out of state, single parent household, absolutely no way I could afford Iowa State. So here I am at my summit league school, wishing I had branched out even a little bit 4 years ago.

I’ll add one last thing. There are plenty of people (many here) that are successful in fields that have no relation to what they studied. Any other passions or skills?
Sports journalism would be the ultimate job, but more so on a national level or covering a college team. Frankly I don’t have interest in “local” high school sports, but I have absolutely no education to back that up, although I do have a good chunk of experience covering college baseball.

My opinion is find the job first. That's the most important thing. If the job is in DSM, then you're better off finding an apartment downtown. IMO that is probably the best place in the state for young college grads. And it's still close enough to hit every ISU sporting event you want to see. Now, if the job is in Ames, then I'd probably look at an apartment or townhouse in Sommerset. Being close to students gets to be annoying the older you get. But Sommerset has a nice mix and it's too expensive for undergrads for the most part.
