Ames is ranked as one of the smartest cities in America

Can you imagine how high up Iowa City would be on that list if they didn't have hawkfans?

I'll take the accolades, and even give IC its props as long as its below Ames... but Boulder as #1. They obviously didn't factor hippies into the equation. (looking for the appropriate Cartman video clip, but I can't find one)

I'm not here to defend Boulder, just offer my observations... sure, there are of course hippies in boulder, just like many other college towns, but the town has changed a lot in the last 25 yrs., it's much more of an rich, elitist, land rover/gore-tex/whole foods crowd than being a "hippie" town. Many of the so-called hippies are what are sometimes dubbed "trippies" or trust fund hippies... they have $$ up the wazoo but take on the hippie image.

This kind of of poll reflects well on Ames and IC and it's kind of cool for the state of Iowa, but any dimwit can realize what the primary economies of these towns are (education/universities, medicine, and federal research facilities) and it's a no brainer. Reverse the situation and look at the towns with the least # of advanced degrees and you'll probably find cities with large processing or manufacturing plants that employ people without advanced degrees.

Did you get that from Cartman during the introductions of a certain Thanksgiving day football game?

Of course, you realize they are equating "having PhDs" with "being smart".

Frankly, I've met more drooling idiots who hold PhDs than any other single class of people, to include Iowa Hawkeye Fans.
Then I'd say you haven't met enough PhDs or enough Hawkeye fans. I'm not going to say that PhDs are smarter than anyone else just by having a PhD, but it certainly is tougher intellectually to get a PhD than it is to get a Bachelors (as it is tougher to get a Bachelors than a High School Diploma). And if you had read the article, you would see that "having PhDs" wasn't included in the ranking. Only % having Bachelors.

We are ranked higher than the hawks? This must just be our superbowl!! :biglaugh:

Hey, I only live about 45 miles from Iowa City! You can't leave me out of this one. How about putting columbus Junction on there? jk

I grew up in Ames, I lived in Iowa City for 10 years, and now I live in Cambridge, MA. Is it a coincidence that all three of these cities are on the list? I think not . . . I just bring up the level of smartness whereever I go

Or, maybe, wherever you LEAVE????

Sorry. I just couldn't help myself. But, logically and technically, that was the comedic version of a Large, Slow One, Right Down The Middle!:biglaugh::yes:

Thanks for the set up. I'll be at the CF lounge all week, please remember to tip your wait staff!

Re: Ames, IA is the 6th smartest city in America

I know they didn't get the "smartest city" designation by City Council actions, that's for sure.
