Yesterday Ames High teacher and swimming coach Dan Flannery passed away unexpectedly. What a terrible tragedy. He was the best swimming coach around the state of Iowa. He lead both the Ames girls and boys swimming teams. Since taking over as head girls swim coach in 2002, his record was 140-11-1. His girls have won the past 8 of the last 9 state titles and the boys took the state title in 2018. Both boys and girls teams have broken multiple state records. He has been named All Iowa swimming coach multiple times.
As some know Ames High is building a new school which includes a new pool. There is a petition started to name the pool after him listed here. If you swam for Dan or had a class with him or even knew him as friend please take the time to sign the petition and keep his memory alive. In only 5 hours there has been over 1900 signatures.
