A longtime Ames resident has left about $1.6 million in her will for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
The late Geitel Winakor was a retired Iowa State professor. She died on Aug. 15, at the age of 81.
City Manager Steve Schainker said in a news release that the City Council, with advice from the Parks and Recreation Commission, will determine the best way to use the money.
Parks Director Nancy Carroll says Winakor’s “philanthropic spirit has left an indelible mark on our park system.â€￾

This is great and obviously says something of her character...but it's hard to see the kind of money these professors end up with when your 34 and still paying off student loans. I would imagine 1.6 is only a part and you hear of professors doing this all the time..leaving millions.
