Allen vs. Mcgee

I think everyone would like Allen more if he just took the ball to the basket a few more times per game instead of settling for jump shots or 3's. He is definitely athletic enough to do so.
For those that have been pleading for more McGee, he did play a season-high 29 minutes last night. Allen played 26.

You can tell that Allen doesn't give a crap about Iowa State. Go watch the video of Scotty drilling the game winning shot and all the players run over to celebrate except Allen. He didn't even smile

Maybe he is secretly one of the posters here who thinks ISU didn't "deserve" to win last night. :spinny:
Highly doubt that. It is really hard for me to cheer for Allen because he acts like he doesn't want to be here
Royce may not have the Big12 experience yet but he's played pretty solid in Big12 play so far.
I think you need the spark that McGee brings off the bench as the 6th man. In college, it really doesn't matter that much who starts. Sometimes this team needs a pickup, and McGee provides that basically every time he comes in.
Allen only took 4 shots last night. Granted he did not play as many minutes as McGee, but then at least he did not end up going 5 for 15 or whatever it was in the Kansas game.
The guy is playing out of position.....some on here act like that is nothing. There is a significant difference between the duties of a PG and a number 2 or 3, both offensively and defensively. I think Allen is trying to adjust. I hope the shot selection gets better, and that he can pick it up a little with the number of assists he gets. That will help the team, but again he is playing out of position.
Some act like he came here as a 20 point per game scorer, and he didn't. His last year at Michigan State, he only averaged about 8 points and 26 minutes per game. Here he is averaging 12 to 13 points a game, or about a 50% increase over his career average.
What has slipped is his shooting percentage, for whatever reason, including poor shot selection. Like others, I would like to see him drive more, finish and/or get fouled.....he is a very good free throw shooter.
As far as whether or not he cares about ISU......I think that is pretty hard to judge. I think his main thing is he wants to finish on a winning team, and would like to get to the NCAA again.....like he did every other year of his college career.

The only thing similar about Babb and Allen lately is they are missing a lot of shots. Babb is hustling all over the place and playing the best defense we've seen out of a player at ISU since Rahshon Clark.
Allen has been to 3 tournies and has the drive and goal to make it to a 4th. His experience of already being there is so important to his teammates who have not experienced it yet. The team is jelling and learning their roles. It is going to be an interesting ride.
You bring up several valid points. However, I think Chris isn't handling the pg duties defensively that much. Scotty guards the opponent's 1 as much as Allen does. Last night Babb even guarded the 1 more than Allen. In addition ISU played a 2-3 as much as they have in any other game this year. This zone also takes away any position (1-2) difference defensively.
I don't think they are really comparable. They are being asked to do different things.
Tyrus is being asked to do what he is good at. Shoot, rebound, bring energy.
CA is being asked to play out of postion and it is hurting him. That said he still gets lost way too much defensively and loses focus, CA needs to be able to contribute when he isn't scoring. Babb figured that out, now CA does as well.

He may not be.....and quite frankly, I have not paid that much attention to his defense. Guess I will watch next game as to who gets back on fast break defense. I don't think the problems with ISU's defense are on the perimeter but are on the inside. Now part of that is on the guards, because other teams are allowed to drive too easily, and part of that is boxing out on re-bounding, but this team gives up way too many bunnies inside.
I think the perimeter defense is actually pretty good. ISU ranks 6th in the Big 12 in FG Percentage Defense, but first in defense against the 3 point shot (conference games only). If you go with all games, ISU is dead last in FG Percentage Defense, but still in the top 3 against the 3 point shot.
IMO, Babb is the best defensive player on the team, and whenever practical will probably be assigned to the other team's leading scorer.
This is why it is good to have lots of players on your team. McGee is alway hustling, working on D and has become a pretty decent rebounder, but he has had several games where he didn't show up offensively. Allen and Babb have also had some rough spots, and some very good nights too. The biggest problem I have is when guys are in a shooting slump, they need to try and work out of it early in games and get a rhythm rather than jacking shots up at crunch time hoping to be the hero. This is the flaw I see in Allen and sometime Babb.
