Allen or Mcgee at point

Something has to change, thats for sure. First things first, we have start by taking Scotty out at PG. That experiment has gone long enough. We can't afford for him to be running the offense and lose us anymore non conference games. Other than that, i'm not sure what we should do.

I'm not sure if the timeline proves this out or not, but it seems to be that the whole "Scottie starting at PG" talk starter right about the same time Allen got his hip pointer.

Me too. All offseason, it seemed to me like it would be Allen, McGee, or Sledge.... and occasionally Royce to create matchup issues. The whole Scotty at PG thing was completely surprising to me. Still can't figure it out. It's been said before and I'll say it again: he's a shooter, plain and simple.

This might be sound crazy, but think about it before you kill it: Maybe Bubu Palo is the answer. He's not a scorer and probably not even one of the top 9 players in terms of raw talent. What he is, is a true point guard...with experience running the point for the greatest high school basketball team ever in the state of Iowa. A guy who was successfull dishing the rock on a nightly basis to the likes of Harrison Barnes and Doug McDermott deserves at least a thought on this issue. We've got scorers and shooters. We need a field general.

He is a true point guard, but I don't think his point guard skills are that much better than Scotty's point guard skills and Scott adds a lot more other things offensively.

Scotty is a true 2 guard. Move him back to it like last year and watch him flourish again. Palo, Scotty, Allen, Ejim, White. Babb, McGee, Railey and Booker off the bench would be a great spark for any team.

Seriously, everyone has this stereotype about Scott. If you actually watch the games last year Scott could penetrate the defense well. He had his best year last year because Fred let him do things other than stand outside of the arc. McDermott didn't let Scott or even Lucca play to their potential because he wanted them to just be 3 point shooters. If you waste one person being involved in your offense because they "only shoot 3's" then you might as well play 4-on-5. Scott is much better at dribbling than people like to imagine.

He is not terrible with the ball and doesn't turn it over much, but he definitely does not look like a PG. He's just not quick enough and is not comfortable taking the risks necessary to drive to the basket. If you put any 2 guard into the PG spot they will most likely feel the same way. In the 2 spot you usually catch the ball with the defender slacking off you playing help D and you can do a fake drive and shoot or do a fake shot and drive, or just shoot if they slack off too much. That is a lot different than bringing the ball up the court with everyone set and your defender expecting you to drive. I think Allen would be our best option since he had 7 assists last night and after watching the CCL he definitely appears to be able to create more. I think his injury is holding him back and he will take over when he is recovered, but the start and stop quickness of a PG probably would not feel too great with a hip pointer. McGee had 0 assists in 25 minutes of play but went 3 for 3 from behind the arc. I'm not sure he would be much different than Scotty running the point.

He isn't our only three point shooter this year, the other shooters might have a more well rounded game... and its not bad to have a fresh sharp shooter off the bench when we really need him.

We had a lot of 3 point shooters last year, just not as good.

It depends on who takes over at point. If it's Allen, Scottie has a legit chance of beating out McGee. If McGee takes over at PG, Scottie likely wont beat out Allen for SG.
 
And let's not forget ... part of this team's problem is poor defense, and few true fast break chances. I'd like to see more pressing, and to me that means more McGee.

Still need a PG, pretty obvious "by committee" isn't going to work --- fortunately there's time to experiment in the non-con. Would personally like to see CA there.

He needs to learn to start playing D. Anyone spending this much time on a post shouldn't mind spending a little time digging up the stats of the opposing player Scotty was guarding. Seems like everyone has career nights when Scotty or Ejim are guarding them. I'd rather see Mcgee start at the 2 for a while. Far better defender, ball handler, and up to this point, shooter.

Unfair comparison of a SG playing PG for the first time and a SG playing SG. Scotty doesn't have to guard their best shooter or ball handler, we have three plus guards on the court at all time, and the help defense was pretty poor all night as well.
