All-Century Team

Iccyfan - I have two Ronnie Harris memories: 1) when he employed the "hack a Tisdale" technique and disrupted the all american in hilton. 2) In one of my first few games in old Beyer Hall, I stepped up to take a charge in a pick-up game (I know, really stupid, but I was a square farm-boy fresh in town). He dunked over me while planting a knee knocking the wind out of me. I remember him standing over me "saying no charges in pick-up games white boy!"

One of the bad things about these Team of the Century lists is that not many of us are 110 years old. It's much easier to recall the players we've seen than look in the record book for outstanding performances from players we've not seen or forgotten. Case in point: Dean Uthoff, who held the career rebounding record and may still hold it for all I know. I can't find my *&#@* record book. Let's not forget those who may be better players than Jake Sullivan and Jacy Holloway. #35, Barry Stevens is a shoo in, though. :wink0st:

Are you implying that those of us who remember Uthoff are old? :wink0st:

Yes he belongs, Tinsley is an exception. Hard to look past the 2 teams he played on which were possibly 2 of the best teams ever at ISU plus his personal achievements can't be looked past either. Guys like Cato, Willoughby, and for some reason people mention Pratt (hopefully they are joking) just did not accomplish as much as he did in 2 years and were not all-american selections.

The 8 automatics I don't think you can really argue they don't belong on the list. The remaining list I just think there are more deserving players ahead of guys like Willoughby, Cato, and Vroman who push them just off the list of remaining selections. Here's a tough one to judge too... Cato or Homan. Homan played 4 years and is the all-time leading shot blocker but Cato played 2 years and set that record in 1/2 the time it took Homan to break it. Both made a NCAA tournament and both have pretty nice career achievements to support their case. I wish I had wrote down who I voted for but I'm pretty sure I didn't vote for either of them. They both did a lot while at ISU and while Cato is in the NBA I'm judging strictly on their time at ISU which I think is a near toss-up with possibly a slight edge to Cato just based on the contributions in a shorter time frame.

Those are all good points. Personally I didn't eliminate guys like Cato but I did give more weight to accomlishments over a longer time period. A lot of it depends on how you interpret a lot of the factors involved.

from what I've heard of loren meyers post nba career, he probably sold it to him. :baffled5wh:

Jackson Vroman's incident happened at the worst time possible for ISU, right after the Eustacy incident. That's my biggest problem with him, is that he drug Iowa State through the dirt right after we'd barely gotten cleaned off. I realize the reason that he was chosen as a candidate for the All-Century team, but I seriously hope that people don't vote for him...

While I'd like the players keep a clean nose after they graduate ISU, once they graduate, the egg doesn't get on the university's face nearly as bad as it does when they are students. How many people think St. Johns when you hear the name Ron Artest?

Perhaps not as old as dirt, CloneFan65, but maybe old enough to remember what the seats in the Armory were like, and old enough to have skated on the ice in Hilton. My seven fill-ins would be Hornacek, Stevens, Tinsley, Ivy, Willoughby, Uthoff, and Harris. Hey, wait, wasn't there a Cain from the 50's and the Zieglers from the 60's? :wink0st:

There was a Carl Cain that played for Iowa in the 50's, but Bill Cain played for the Cyclones in the late 60's (greatly underrated).
Bob and Don Zeigler played in the mid 60's with Al Koch (see list right after Hercle Ivy).
The Armory had this great balcony right in back of both baskets. Had to sit on folding chairs, but got a really good look at some really good players. Got a great view of some silkly moves by Lou Hudson one afternoon.

Maybe someone can do some stats research to create a "case" for this guy but somewhat surprised Jacy Holloway didn't get a mention. He has to be up there in assists and steals and FT% leaders I would think. While I can't endorse him for one of the last spots he was a pretty solid PG that never really did anything flashy but did contribute to some successful teams with his decision making running the PG.

I have to respond to this. Yes he didn't make mistakes. But he never shot the ball!!!! His defender would be double teaming someone else on our team in the lane because Holloway couldn't drive to the hole or shoot the ball. I know he was told not to shoot, but man he would drive me freakin nuts. I posted earlier that I believe he did make one big three in his tenure at Iowa State but that doesn't constitute he's a good shooter. That being said, I would definitely take him at the point this year.

Bill Cain was a good player and I remember watching him in the Armory. He was one of my seven. How those bleachers in the air would rock and I mean back and forth.
