AJ Green Leaves the Portal - Staying in Draft

JFC just stop, we were ranked 5th on defense and 184th on offense last year. You understand that those numbers can balance out a little more and we'll still have a good team right?
You didn’t watch a lot of games last year, did you?

Best case scenario on offense with the additions it’s maybe top 130. So dropping to top 35 on defense isn’t really a great trade off when you’re playing 1-2 possession games

Wtf is your deal this morning? Tyrese is already gone. He isn't coming back. This isn't a choice for TJ. He can't pick who he'd rather have between Tyrese and AJ.

Iowa St has to move forward. AJ is a huge step toward being better, and you can't argue against that.
The point is, and has been, ripping on a kid because he didn’t want to play for your team

People were jerking themselves off to how good the kid is going to be right up to the point he left

AJ is a very very good player. If he doesn’t stay in the G league, he’s going to make the offense look better because there will be at least one guy that is a consistent threat from deep. Defensively, it’s big step back.

But we’re not getting better at the point guard position. It’s ok to admit that. Not sure why people can’t

Torvick had our offense ranked 101st right now without the addition of AJ Green, but yeah, you're completely right that 130 is our ceiling adding a prolific shooter and scorer.

I fully expect TJ to publicly mope about TH leaving all next season. /s

That's fine if you want to stick up for Tyrese, his abilities, and his contributions last season, but he has nothing to do with Iowa St's success or failure next season.

Yes, and pretending that he wasn’t that good to cope, is silly

Where's all the ripping and brow beating? Pointing out his flaws, which he does have despite being a great player who will only keep getting better, isn't ripping him. I see a lot of people discussing moving on and what players we have/potentially could add to have another good season next year. Then I see you acting like we can't do **** without Tyrese as if he carried us last year. Lipsey could give us something similar on D next year and I wouldn't be shocked. Not like we all knew Hunter would have the year he wound up having. I'm feeling good and trusting Otz to put a winning team together since he managed last year.

When did the season start?

Did you watch any uni games last year?
UNI led the Valley in scoring.

You're absolutely right that AJ isn't the defender that Hunter is. No question about it but to think that he won't have a massive impact on improving the offense is off base, IMO. He's a legitimate threat that you have to guard to 28 feet and is able to get his own. Just having him on the floor is going to vastly improve the space that everybody else has to operate.

Of course he won’t. But he also won’t talk about how losing a player of Hunter’s caliber isn’t that big of a deal either.

AJ can be worth 3 wins on his own with his ability to score the ball.

But if you watched the game at Loyola, and the game against the ramblers in the MVC tournament, physicality can also be an issue for him. The big 12 plays football defensively anymore. I think that succeeding against that type of play would answer the final question about him for the pros.

What does “that good” mean?

He was that good for a freshman.

He wasn’t all-Big 12. Your offense generally goes as your pg and high volume top talent goes. And he wasn’t “that good” in that respect. Gabe obviously also a big issue. If he’s a Cyclone he gets the benefit of fans focusing on the positive, which a big part of was the expected future upside. He’s no longer a Cyclone.

That upside is still there, but being a fan now means rooting he doesn’t reach it. Fan support is, and should be, conditional. That’s true for bad coaches that are tanking the program.

If he comes to Iowa State, he will absolutely upgrade the offense, and the locker room, great kid

There were many concerns!
He’s just asking questions.

I’m sure if we look at his posts during the season, he didn’t melt down during every loss, and think we weren’t going to make the tournament, from at least mid January on.

He was really good for a freshman last year. Best in the conference. He also wasn't first team all conference like IB. He wasn't 2nd team either, or even 3rd team. He wasn't even voted honorable mention all conference. So the voters, even though they thought he was the best freshman, didn't even consider him a top 30 player in conference (Sochan was the only freshman who made honorable mention). While some are certainly underselling his loss, we also have plenty of chicken littles overselling it.

It sucks losing him because he probably will end up as a first team all conference player in the future. However, when comparing what this year's team will be compared to last year's it's nowhere near impossible to replace Hunters production from last year.

They already have projected rankings based on the new players and we are 101st right now in offense.

And yeah, I watched a few UNI games, the dude is a prolific scorer and shooter. He was "an exactly what this team is missing" kind of guy when I saw him play.

You're insufferable, all year people are complaining about how bad our offense was now it looks like we might get Green and his defense isn't good enough for you. You can't have it both ways.
