So we want to add a 15'x16' screened in porch to our house involving deck flooring and a gable roof. The first bid came in at $36,000 which seems pretty high to me. I did a little research beforehand and was expecting it to be around $20,000 - $25,000. Anybody have any experience with this? Is the bid I received too high or were my expectations out of whack?

Awfully high for a porch. But there aren't a ton of decent carpenters and they are really busy right now. Look around or wait a while.

I'm assuming you are talking about getting a deck built and then adding a roof and screening it in.

Yes, the flooring would be new composite deck boards built over an existing concrete slab with an underlying screen to keep the bugs out.

That is about what a friend was quoted for roughly the same thing. Ended up at about a third the cost by just having the roof part done. We built the rest of it. I would agree with the above comment that builders can pretty much name their price right now.

well, I'm doing a complete 12'x16' shed with 9 cu yards of concrete as a base for $13k. It's unfinished...but the framing can't be a whole lot different than what you'd be doing. That seems really high, IMO. (hip roof on our shed)

Last house we did a complete 4 season add on to our house in the size your talking and it was $40k completed.
