ADD Medicine Side effects?

Heres the crazy thing... for us real ADDers, ritalin (which I'm on) actually slows us down. My wife will occasionally partake in a pill and she speeds her *** off. Not so for me. Brain chemistry - pretty crazy, huh?

Yep, it slowed me way down which is very odd.

The thing is, everyone has add to a point. I am not sure I believe all the add hype. 20 years ago we never heard of it. My buddy claims to have it and when I play golf with him I will pop one of his pills and my game gets better. Do the pills work or is it in my head?

Exactly...that's what people don't understand. Our brains are firing like crazy and moving so fast we can't keep up with it. ADD medication when used properly helps slow everything down and put it all in perspective.

Also, I take Adderall XR (extended release) in the morning so that it wears off by evening and i don't have trouble sleeping. I have taken it later in the day and sometimes i can't sleep.

I've been on Concerta and Adderall. My doctor told me your weight can factor into the effectiveness of an A.D.D. If you're a light man (weight wise), you may want to discuss with your doctor if the Concerta maybe too strong for you.

Concetra for me wasn't extremely effective, so I was bumped up to Adderall and similar side effects. No appetite, and I would sometimes stay up for 36-48 hours straight.
I'm not sure what the standards are now, but I'm 17, roughly 6 foot and 160, so probably right around average would be my guess. Where you on 54mg for Concerta?

The side effects of ADD medicine are many and several sever. Let' me explain a few. . .

SERIOUSLY?!? If we lived in that world, we'd be screwed. So does that mean you don't believe in autism since it hasn't always been around and now more kids are being diagnosed with it?

Oh my no.

It's been roughly 10 years since I was on Concerta, so I don't remember what my dosage was, but I can tell you it was nowhere near that much.

I was put on Concerta when I was 17. I was 5'8" and about 215 at the time.

I've read on the internet that artificial dyes in food are to blame.. But then again, that was just on some random website, nothing out of a medical journal.

Worst side effects I've had is the rapid heart beat and not being able to sleep. However, I'm able to sit and do chemistry or math for 4-5 straight hours no problem and no distractions its awesome for being efficient and getting things done and being focused but i think the side effects suck. Its caused my sister anxiety issues as well because of the sleep thing.

Man, when I eat addy I can pound **** out like a beast without eating. I can also drink 20 beers no problem- I just puke all day long the day after. AWESOME

I think his point was that it may be over-diagnosed. Seems to be a trend in school children, perhaps because it gets extra funding for the schools.

Well, to be honest here, I believe that there are far better options for people with ADD. Adderall is not the answer. Sure it makes you focused, but it is speed. Sorry, I forgot the :jimlad: in my last post.

The actual diagnosis is ADHD. It is a spectrum and this confirms your "qualifications" to educate anyone on this issue.

While at it tell me about your mastery of anxiety disorder-sure Royce would love your help.

This is exactly what I was going to post.

30 years ago, people with autism or ADHD were just "different" or "funny." There was no treatment. While EVERYTHING has a danger of being overdiagnosed and overmedicated, there is real value in the meds for those who actually need them.

I've had fairly mild ADD as long as I can remember. When I was diagnosed, they didn't recommend medication so I've just had to learn to deal with it. Essentially, I've found that just putting background music on helps me concentrate on a task. In school, I often struggled with lectures because they often went slower than I was used to. I found that if I did more research and dug deeper on topics that helped keep me "interested".

Pretty sure some of the world's best entertainers have extreme hyper active attention deficit disorder. For some it's not a disease- it's a blessing.

Jim Carrey
David Lee Roth
Craig Ferguson
Robin Williams
Eddie Murphy
Flea

To name a few. They never would have been famous if they had been drugged up as children. That's how I feel about my "condition." It's the way the creator wired me, and I'm okay with that. I still pay all my bills on time.

I have noticed that the people I've met who have this are very outgoing and personable. Not sure if that is a connection or not, but it seems like it.

I've been taking methylphenid (Ritalin) for 10+ years with no sideeffects. My son also takes it but it does suppress his appetite. We have both tried most of the others (except aderall) and nothing works as good for us.

A lot of doctors are hesitant to prescribe ritalin due to the balck market trade.

Stay focused my friend.

I think my doctor might try vyvance next. I know my little cousin is on Ritalin, and seems to work very well for him
