I hear the NCAA is moving to no longer allow D1 coaches to view AAU tournaments in April. This would mean that July will be the only time they can view AAU tournaments (unless a tournament is held at their school). Apparently, teams will still be able to play in front of recruiting services. It looks like the NCAA is trying to put power back into the hands of the high school coach and also help kids focus on grades in April...instead basketball. Anyone else heard this news...is it correct?
 
Interesting. As long as it is a fair playing field, I guess I don't care either way. As a parent, however, it is probably better for the kids to be focusing school.
 
I wonder what the rationale for that is. That is too bad for us because we seem to get a decent number of players out of the AAU system that flew under other teams radar.
 
Roy Smith and Tim Floyd can send out some spies to tape them. Then they can text message them. Then they can email them you tube " I really like you as a player videos." The coaches will fuind a way. After all, big money is at stake.

Does this mean UNC, Duke, & KU will all be "hosting" AAU tournaments in April now??

There is always a way to get around the system, unless you are Iowa State. :skeptical:

Do you have any data that suggests AAU basketball players do not focus on school during the month of April?

Good point. Personally, I thought that if school and grades were an issue, the AAU tournaments simply wouldn't be played in April.

It almost sounds as if the coaches want their brief post-March Madness vacation time back. April used to be their time to take a break.

From coaching AAU in the past I know that many of the kids that we took to play excelled in the classroom.

That's wonderful. I'm sure that, of the kids playing AAU, you have the whole gamut...from good grades to average grades to poor grades.

I think you could say that for anything that has thousands of high school kids participating.

Let me make a bold statement.

In speech competition you have the whole gamut....from good grades to average grades to poor grades. I know, I know, it's SHOCKING! :biglaugh:
 
Yes, but. The Spring AAU tournaments that we are talking about are not Sat/Sun affairs and are a short distance away from a very few players. They usually are 3-4 day events and kids miss school to play and travel. There can be no question that Spring AAU tournaments take away from any focus on academics.
 
I think it's a good thing. These high school kids spend enough time on the road as is.
 
Coaches introduced a bill to override it a few days ago, and it only got like 2 votes out of the 5 required.
