It has occured to me that if the Big 10 expands (which appears inevitable) that sooner or later some of their teams will become a drag on the money pie. At that point they will have to look at "pruning" the league. The most obvious choices to cull from the herd would be Northwestern and Iowa. They could still have all the TV sets in Illinois with the Illini and the state of Iowa has such a low population that they could easily get rid of them with virtually no downside. Sure Iowa has a loyal fan base but the league looks at the small pop. and says' "What the heck, why should we give Iowa an equal share of our reveue pie? If we got rid of them everyone else gets a bigger piece".

Nice post.

1) Do we need another thread? ugh.

2) Not going to happen. Step away from it as an ISU fan. Iowa is good for the Big 10.

Won't ever happen.

The BigTen is to the NFL as the Big 12 is to MLB. They care about the gains they can make as a collective unit, whereas in the Big 12 it's like the wild west - every man for himself.

I totally agree with the first part of the thought and could definitely see Northwestern shown the door from the big 10, I do not however, see iowa being shown the same thing. after ohio st, michigan, penn state - iowa - along with wisconsin is arguably the best thing to the big 10. Purdue could possibly be shown the door after NW, but I still think this is awhile down the road.

The Big Ten will never kick Iowa out.

A schism would play out the way the WAC dissolved.

The "haves" would form their own conference and leave the "have nots" the Big 10.

They won't kick out either of these two teams. They are original members and both bring a fair amount to the table in different categories (NW= academics and Chicago, Iowa= entire state of Iowa + strong loyal fan base that travels well & supports the program, good football tradition)

Iowa & NW Would Have to Ask Out

and we know that isn't going to happen. There is less than a 0% chance that Iowa or NW get the boot.

Besides the Big 10 being an athletic conference, those schools are also part of an academic consortium called the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. All the Big 10 schools and Chicago are members. As long as Iowa & Northwestern are quality academic instituations- they aren't going anywhere.

Add to that both schools go way back in the Big 10, Northwestern founded the Big 10 in 1896 and Iowa joined in 1899.

I think they'd kick minnesota out before iowa..iowa just made the orange bowl and have a great football traditon and plenty of fans, they don't have to compete with a pro team for fans

I just think sooner or later the Big 10 will gobble all the teams up, there will be less opposition, less matchups for bowl games.

I heard they almost kicked Iowa out a couple years ago due to all the legal troubles the athletes were having in IC.

hmmm... new symbol for the conference?

You are an idiot.

Northwestern would never get kicked out of the Big Ten because of their academics. One of the best non-ivy league colleges in the country.
