A.J. Derby......

DJK - of those schools, are they all recruiting him as a qb - i thought i saw that some of the higher bcs schools were offering him as an athlete and not sure where he may land but is an obvious talent regardless.....

SH - My original post is not different - like you say, he has a lot of ties to the hawks and UofI. But, i'm not sure how thats any different then the Barnes situation, because he has a lot of ties to ISU so why are the two completely different situations?

I could say that ISU has a better shot at getting Barnes then EIU does at getting Derby - but realistically, both have a chance, just not a great chance.

But, to me, with these type of athletes, the allure of being on one of the top teams in the nation and playing for the national title excludes the hawks and cyclones......and these kids end up going somewhere else like Duke, UNC, USC, FLORIDA....and can you blame them....NO!!!!

So far, all schools are recruiting him as a QB. I think Iowa originally wanted to recruit him as an ATH but once Bama and Florida offered him at QB, their hand was kind of forced. He's said that's the only position he'll play in college. As far as the Barnes comparison... it's a little different as Derby is a legacy and has a brother already on the team.

There are several articles on HN about this very topic and within those articles there are direct quotes from family members of AJ Derby that say they would be very surprised if he went anywhere other than Iowa. That AJ has always dreamed of playing at Iowa and has a great relationship with the coaching staff and many of the players. He has a much better chance of getting on the field at Iowa as a QB than he does at Florida; that right there is reason enough to choose Iowa.

Great Point for a change Gitwitit.....i think that holds about as much common sense as any post i've ever seen you make - and probably will be the motivating factor. USC or Florida may want him to change positions and he may be like Phillip Bates and say no way, i want to play QB that alone could make him a hawk....

But you know how recruiting goes, Urban or Pete may tell him he can be a qb and then lose in a qb battle then ask him to change positions?????

And Barnes Mother who he is extremely close to is an ISU employee. And he has practiced with the ISU basketball team in the off season for three years....

there more alike then you'd like to think....

But Gitwitits scenario is the most realistic - derby has a shot to play early at the new U and Barnes will play wherever he goes as a freshmen regardless!!!!

I would really like to see some of these quotes.

No, actually they probably agree whole heartedly with my original post, wherein I said that offering Derby is a no lose situation for them, it is low risk/high reward. If he works out at QB, that is great, if he doesn't, he is an exceptional athlete that will find the field somewhere. They might not think he is a great QB, but they probably know he is an excellent athlete that has upside at positions other than QB (as well as having the potential to work out at QB).

DJK -

Think what you will, this won't be resolved for 4 years, but I don't think Derby will be as good of a QB as you think he will be in college. His first starting experience at QB was last fall as a JR against Iowa high school football competition. That alone stacks the deck against him dramatically. I just think he is more of an athlete than a QB. Of course, as stated above, this discussion is pointless because only time will tell the answer.

You are wrong. If you think Derby could play LB at Florida than you are on something. TE maybe, but they are all recruiting him at QB. Despite what you think about Iowa high school football, the kid is getting rave reviews at all the camps he goes to....as a QB!

Iowa has already said they will give him a chance there first. Many of the other offers coming in are either as an athlete or on the defensive side of the ball. I think Bama is interested in having him play strong safety or maybe even OLB eventually.

I could say that ISU has a better shot at getting Barnes then EIU does at getting Derby - but realistically, both have a chance, just not a great chance. Derby has had family member's quoted as saying Iowa is the favorite even though he won't say that now himself. The same cannot be said for Barnes. Barnes is a higher profile target for the "big" programs basically because b-ball teams usually only bring in 1-3 players per year whereas a football team might bring in 3 qb's in any given year, not too mention athletes and safeties, etc.

But, to me, with these type of athletes, the allure of being on one of the top teams in the nation and playing for the national title excludes the hawks and cyclones......and these kids end up going somewhere else like Duke, UNC, USC, FLORIDA....and can you blame them....NO!!!!
You cannot blame them for at least exploring the opportunities and taking advantage of the free recruiting trips. In the end they just need to sit back and listen to those they trust from their inner circle and make the best decision possible. It's important they don't get swept away in all the hoopla when they go and visit a place like Florida; you know they put on a show for recruits.

This is ESPN's evaluation of him....by the way, he's listed as a top 150 player - so they're not hatin on him!!!!

We question the overall level of competition he faces at times, but we feel what coaches see here is tremendous upside as an overall football player and if he does not pan out at QB, he would make for an ideal tight end candidate as hi frame continues to fill out. Very good prospect.

hawk fans are more delusional about Derby that ISU fans about HB.... lol

Really...I could have sworn that I put Iowa's chances at 45% in this very thread. Oh, that's right. You only pick out the delusional Hawk fans predictions and then lump us all together. How silly of me.

Don't worry I won't pull a cyclonemann and lump you together!

I think most Hawk fans have a realistic approach with Derby. He really is their Harrison Barnes. While he is not as big of a recruit as HB, he does have just as strong of ties to Iowa, and Iowa has had more football success the last 4 years than ISU has had for bball

I actually would still be really surprised if Derby went to Florida. I saw a clip earlier about Tebow's backup and how good they think he is going to be. I know they also go a stud from the east coast last year that is bigger and faster then Derby, and already have a 4 star QB commit for this year.

QB for City High. Dad played for the Hawks. Brother currently on the team.

Is Zack Derby his brother? Maybe A.J. won't want to follow in his footsteps...

"Zachary Derby pleaded guilty Friday to public intoxication charges stemming from an April 6 incident in downtown Iowa City. Derby, son of former Iowa linebacker John Derby, were scheduled to go to trial on Friday. Both filed written guilty pleas in the case after initially paying $300 in bonds."

You continue to prove my point with your responses, and yet, won't stop responding. My point is this: If he doesn't work out at QB (which is his preference), an exceptional athlete like AJ can find the field somewhere (as you indicate, maybe at TE).....I'm sure that is what both Saban and Meyer are thinking - he is a low risk/high reward kind of player because of his athleticism. Do you disagree with the above statement? If you do, you simply don't know much about recruiting in college football. Any QB can turn out to be a bust at the collegiate level, but few have the athletic ability to play at other positions, which is why AJ is such an appealing prospect.

You are saying you don't think the kid will be a D1 QB. I am stating that most professionals disagree...strongly w/ you.

Rivals has him ranked as the #17 athlete in the class. He didnt break the top 30 as a dual threat qb.
