I'd like to see ISU do the same thing with #3 to honor former Cyclone Brian Pearson.
I'm pretty sure that after he passed they had a walk on wear a #3 in honor of him for a couple of years. I'm sure someone from home remembers, so I'll ask around.

You're about a decade off, friend.Found the answer-Wheat wore it to finish the 2003 season after Chris's death on Jan 20. Hoiberg wore it the next year, then Meyer, the Klay Edwards.
Oh how time flies by! Thanks GC I corrected it!You're about a decade off, friend.
It just seems that a tradition isn't something that goes away after a few years. I'm sure there are a ton of traditions at schools all around the country that the athletes have no knowledge of the origin.
The main reason the Chris Street "tradition" was started, though, was because Hoiberg, Wheat, & Meyer were all Iowa guys and Wheat and Hoiberg would've played against him in high school. They had their own personal connection. I'm okay with that one running it's course.
There is no #40 on the Hawkeye 2010-11 roster. If they've let it go, no reason ISU should continue.
