I still think if Arnaud is the one unless Bates is head and shoulders above him. Bates is more athletic and can play receiver if asked...I don't know if Austen can play anything other than quarterback...

As far as the punt return question...from what I've heard look for Devin McDowell and Allan Bell to get looks...that's no guarantee though.

It would be nice if Carlson could come in and handle punts and/or kick-offs. I'd hate to lose a starting CB again like Jackson.

I want this to be interactive. If you think I’m a moron, tell me. I just might feel the same way about you. Let’s just keep it clean. Negative feedback is better than no feedback at all.

My personal opinion is you are the subject matter expert - not I. Who am I (or the majority of us, for that matter) to call someone a moron who's career focuses on the ins and outs of Iowa State athletics, especially when one is getting paid to write premium content? If we get into an argument about how the Army should write its manuals on how to operate and maintain its howitzers, then maybe I have the right to call you a moron. But if the argument is over Cyclone athletics, I'm the one that's more likely going to look like the idiot

I have always enjoyed reading your information about Cyclone athletics, and I look forward to reading more in the future.

Can you answer this one? If somehow Bates does beat out Arnaud, is there another position that Arnaud could possibly play, or will he be relegated to holding a clipboard?

I'm thinking the dual quarterbacks is not necessarily a bad thing. I remember when George Amundsen was a sophomore and Dean Carlson was a junior. They shared the quarterback position with one exception; occasionally Amundsen would come in as a wide out or something and generally a trick play would result.

The next year Amundsen moved to running back full time leaving the quarterback slot to Carlson. Amundsen became Iowa State's first 1,000 yard rusher. When Carlson graduated, Amundsen went back to quarterback. During Amundsen's All Star game (I think it may have been the Senior Bowl) he played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and tight end to show his diversity. Both played briefly in the pros, Amundsen as a running back and Carlson as a quarterback.

If their isn't a whole lot of difference between Arnaud and Bates, I think the precedence at ISU is pretty good. I think a 60-40 split might work well changing the starter based on the competition. The following year if Tiller is as good as advertised, we could think about swapping out one of the three to their most likely pro position.

well if Bates beats out Arnaud to be teh sole QB, ISU better be scoring 50 pts a game.

I go with the saying that if you have 2 quarterbacks you really dont have one. I think Arnaud will win out but im definetely not in favor of any 2 qb format. Those hardly ever work. Usually (except florida one year) if you have more the one qb it means your not usually sure who to go with. With Flynn and Meyer it didn't work either and our team was better when we went to 1. Arnaud will start and id be happy if Bates moved to Saftey where he belongs.

This is by no means slighting Arnaud but from what I have been told and seen in the past, no. Austen is a QB and a very good one. Bates however is so athletic he can play a handful of positions. You can line him up in the backfield and let him run the ball...put him at WR. Let him return punts. He could play DB. He's a utility guy who is way too athletic and special to keep on the sidelines in my opinion.

The rub is, can we keep him if he doesn't win or at least share the QB job? That's a big question mark.

That video of Knight is classic. Can you imagine Knight and Johnny playing golf together? They could make a sailor blush
