3 pt defense

I may be imagining this, but I don't really think it is much different than last year other than teams are making more. I may be way off but it seems as if Freddy puts a big emphasis on not giving up points in the paint, whether that is through doubling or whatever, and making them shoot to score, no different than years past. If they hit their outside shots they have a chance, if they don't we win easily. Our offense is our best defense, allows us to play mediocre at best D and still have a chance to win every game. Would it be great if our D was better? Yes, but it would also probably slow down our O. Don't get me wrong I know we are a flawed team and could play better D, but I think the philosophy is solid and if teams out shot us we may just have to live with it.

Also great info from whoever put the stat about possessions per game and how it would increase the number of 3's a team would take.

I like that philosophy as a general rule, but it needs to be tweaked depending on the opponent. Forcing KU to take outside shots is not a good idea since their guards can hit them consistently. Before the game, I was much more worried about Mason or Greene torching us than Selden, but as others have pointed out, anyone can hit threes if you don't guard them.

That said, Kansas only has three losses on the year, so there's not really a blueprint to how to best defend them, because most teams that have tried have failed.

That may be part, but it wouldn't explain Greene, who has been going off for a while now.

We rotated slowly and left three-point shooters open. That's on us, but it's fixable.

I guess I'm not seeing how Greene is one of Kansas top 2 or 3 options. And it isn't like he went off. He hit two threes and was gifted 3 of his 6 attempts from the charity stripe on a BS phantom foul.

Be that as it may, I'm not talking about KU; I'm talking about the larger issue that was brought up on why ISU seems to often have a nobody be the come out of nowhere star. I was just suggesting that how you force teams to beat you might have something to do with it. It is not meant to explain everything.

I think part of the problem is with the double or not to double is that we dont mix it up and not send anyone very often. Therefore the other team knows what exactly will happen and how best to take advantage of the situation. Elite programs dont depend upon luck they make their own luck by pressuring the ball (think Larry E's teams). But depending on luck is why I disliked watching the Wayne Morgan era it didnt matter if we were the better team at the time it mattered if the other team made enough open 3's.

What's interesting is that our defense against WVU was simply amazing - some of the best I'd seen all year. So I'm not shocked that that was our best game.

That being said, I think it's just an energy thing. The guys don't look like they're giving any effort whatsoever on the defensive end. Unbelievably slow coming off screens - and it shows in those Selden three's how much we didn't care about defense against Kansas.

I think it was more related to conditioning than effort. Rotating on D after 20-30 seconds takes some mental and physical toughness. Both teams played really hard the first half. We can't be content to not contest just because we want to pack it in.

With McKay waiting in the middle, I would like to see us run some more shooters off the line. We have Edozie with 5 free fouls if needed.
