It's not about making money, it's about valuing your time. If a person asked for help at$50/hour would you do it vs $14/hour? If yes or no, why? We all trade our time for something, whether it's money or relaxation or whatever. If someone said would you like an extra half hour of golf for $5 would you do it?

He literally said its about valuing your time, not money.

When I lived in Ankeny the Quik Trip on 1st Street always had a big sign with the gas price. I paid attention then because that store would always go up in price a day or so later than the other places in town. Now I live in West Des Moines and I never notice gas prices.

But honestly, I have driven less than 8000 miles over the past year (September-September). I saved quite a bit of money and wear and tear on my car because of COVID.

Went to Sam's Club tonight and I made note of the gas line. From the time I went in to the time I got out was 23 minutes. The car at the end of the line was first in line when I got out, so they spent 38% of an hour in line for gas.

The gas was 39¢ cheaper at Sam's Club than the local gas station.

The average car is about 15 gallons, so let's assume they're close to empty and filling up 14 gallons worth of gas.

14 gallons x .39¢ = $5.46.

$5.46 ÷ .38 = $14.37/hour. By waiting in line, they're valuing their time at $14.37 per hour.

Is this something you do or would do? I fill up before my tank hits half empty so I don't mind paying a bit more per gallon.

Edit. If you take into account the 5% cash back rewards on gas bought at any station, the lower gas price per gallon at Sam's means they value their time at $13.63 per hour.

I am quite sensitive to the price of gas. Every extra dollar spent on fuel is a dollar not spent on recreation, investments, etc. But with that being said, I will not wait in line for gas unless I'm on fumes.

As for the true "cost," not withstanding credit card rebates, a much bigger factor is using after tax dollars. Subtract FICA, federal, and state taxes and the difference magnifies. Is it worth it? People will do what they want and find a way to justify it...even if it means ignoring significant factors.

People are weird when it comes to gas. I saw a guy the other day lift the hose from the top of the pump to apparently get all of the fuel out of the hose? Apparently I've been leaving free gas behind?

Subarus get the express line with passenger side gas cap.
There's quite a few cars that have that, I know my parents equinox it is on the passenger side, same on my Trooper, and the Malibu I drove in HS.

Casey's on Orlabor and Delaware is where I'll stop a lot, have found out even the Casey's right across the interstate to the east is 10 cents more usually, don't know about the one directly north across the drive to Walmart though :D.. thats 3 Casey's within 1/2 mile of each other.

My Costco membership is worth the savings in gas alone

Out of curiosity what is the savings at Costco on gas? The one by me is always 15 deep at every single pump no matter what time of day. Traffic was backing up so badly into the main road they actually closed two aisles of parking and are now using that as the queuing location.

I have a company car so I don't pay a ton of attention, but I do try and avoid a couple of places that I know jack prices way up (there was one that used to be on my way to the interstate from the office that was at least $.30 more expensive due to it's proximity to the interstate). Knew someone who would drive 5 miles to get gas that was maybe $0.10 cheaper a gallon ignoring the fact that it was just wasted since his SUV probably averaged 20 mpg.

When I lived in NY one of our managers wife would actually drive 10 miles out of her way to NJ so that someone would pump her gas for here in the winter and she didn't have to get out of the car.

As far as wait time, it goes quickly. I’d say the longest I’ve ever waited was 10 minutes. (I fill up at the West Des Moines Location)

For a while I was saving about 40 cents per gallon, but it’s closed the gap a little bit to like 20-30 cents/gallon.

My car takes 21 gallons to fill. I wouldn't wait in a line that long - if I can't be one of the next cars to the pumps at Costco (a wait of less than 5 minutes) I'm probably not filling up there. So 21 x .38 = $7.98

7.98 / .0833 = $95.80

I make frequent trips between Minneapolis and Des Moines. I stop in Mason City. Gas is less expensive in Iowa, especially considering the car is a flex fuel vechicle. Iowa subsidies. Minnesota does not.

Got gas at Sam's club for the first time recently. I was annoyed that they require you to approach from only one side. Seems like there are way more cars with gas cap on the driver's side than passenger.

And the 20% of people that flaunt the rule just make chaos.

when I need 32 gallons of diesel I will wait at the gas station that has it cheaper.
