Yes and yes. Got a permit at 14 and was the 1st of my friends to drive to school for baseball in my sister's 88 grand prix. I got to drive my dad's truck most of the time. Got a 93 beretta that had a subwoofer in the trunk my junior year and a 98 grand prix for college. My kids will get hand me downs when they are old enough. Have a 49 Chevy truck in a shed I was hoping to have restored by the time they got old enough that they could drive for special occasions but that probably won't happen. This thread has been a lot of fun
We bought a conversion van a few years ago for road trips. The guy we bought it from said he was getting rid of it because if he didn't it would be his daughter's daily driver and he wasn't letting her drive a vehicle that had a backseat that turned into a bed.
Had a friend that had a Lincoln from the 70s. You could fit 8 guys in that thing comfortably.
I grew up on a farm, school was 15 miles away and I was in a lot of extracurriculars. My dad bought me a 1989 Chevy full size truck when I turned 16. Several times a week I had a message of what I needed to pick up on my way home from school. If it wasn't stopping at the feed store, it was hauling wagons of hay home from the hay auction. I was supposed to be responsible for my own gas but I usually filled up on the farm account at the coop. I loved that truck! I have a 13 year old and the plan is she will inherit our 2014 Honda CRV when she turns 16 and my husband will get a new vehicle. Already checked and we aren't eligible for bussing when she moves to high school so she will have to drive herself.
One of my fathers goal in life, was buying each of his children their first vehicle. In 1979 he purchased mine a 1975 Camaro, had 45K miles on it for $3,600. Drove it all through college and traded it off in 1986 for $500 on a new vehicle.

My Dad told me that if I got good grades and was in an extracurricular sport and or arts program then I would never have to worry about wheels and dough to go out on the weekends. Love my parents.
Parents got me a ’96 Ford Escort in 2002ish. I dont have kids, but if I did I’d try and find them a car when they turned 16 depending upon the level of stupidity I’d witnessed in their lives to that point.
Yes. It was the same car that both of my sisters drove and my brother drove after me. '95 Honda Civic. It was bought lightly used by my parents for my oldest sister and then got passed down amongst the kids.
I'll never get my dad to admit it, but I think he took a small amount of pride(?) being able to buy his kids a vehicle when we are all in college, especially considering he was on the definite opposite end of the spectrum growing up (blah, blah, spoiled kids, blah, blah, heard it all in college).

My oldest just turned 15, so we're starting to talk about having them share the 2012 Civic with me until I get something "new" in a few years. We'll probably gift it to them whenever they move out to wherever they go.

I bet a lot of people wish they had that car now. Those were pretty nice cars and affordable at the time. I had a couple of friends with similar cars. They all bought at least some of it themselves by working.
Yep, mine pretty much looked just like that. Had a burgundy leather interior. 351 Cleveland, had it up to about 130 MPH one night on a county road.
Bought a car my Freshman year in high school using $$ earned from selling 4H pigs for a couple years. Living on a farm and being involved in athletics it was basically a requirement to have a car. Drove that thing through high school and halfway through ISU.
Bought each of my kids a car when they got their school permits. Both cars were way nicer than anything my wife or I had at that age BUT the older daughter (Junior in college) has had the car going on 6 trouble free years so I know we have got our $$ worth and I expect the younger's car to perform the same.
With both parents working it is just too damn hard to get high school kids to places they need to be.

actually there is one for sale near by at a used car lot that has been there for a while, it is a 5 speed manual that looks pretty decent. would be a neat little beater to pick up maybe.
