I'd do delivery every day from homemakers, because you can have them put it together. Plus now that everyone drives the 4 door trucks not much room in the box.

We bought a new couch awhile back and had it shipped from Homemakers in Des Moines to our house for $75. My father-in-law was beside himself that we would "waste" $75 having something delivered when he has a pickup truck that we can use.

I had to explain to my wife (so she could tell her dad) that it was a waste of our time to NOT have it delivered.

Driving to/from Des Moines from our house would take 3 hours. Waiting for the couch and loading it would take 30 minutes. Unloading it and setting it up would take another 30 minutes. So, there's 4 hours of time, plus gas just to get the couch to my house. Not only that, but since her dad lives in another town we'd either have to drive there first and go to Des Moines with him or he'd have to meet us in Des Moines, drive to our house, and then back to his house after the couch was set up. Now we have gas for two cars.

To me, saving that time/trouble was worth $75. He was furious that we would spend $75 have someone else do something we could do ourselves.

So, CF, when is spending money to save time worth it?

Always. I'd think about a divorce if this one needed to be explained.

Yes, I will pay more money for convenience

For me it depends on the situation. I would drop 75 bones to have a couch delivered and i live about 10 minutes away from Homemakers. Those guys are pro's and make it look easy.

When it comes to DIY repairs around the house or on my vehicles I get a sense of pride fixing or replacing something and would rather save a few bucks.

There was a time in my life when I wouldn't have even considered spending the $75 for delivery. Raising three kids, financing the couch, living life pay check to pay check, and having a healthy back.
Now being retired and having some disposable income but still not wealthy I wouldn't even consider the couch purchase without delivery for all the reasons you mentioned it makes sense. Also if it gets dropped, scratched, torn, etc in the process it's on them.

Depends on each person's wants, needs, and financial situation. My wife is 2 weeks from her due date and we have a 3 y.o. daughter. We just paid $200 to have someone clean our house last weekend. 5 years ago, I would have flipped out if my wife had spent that kind of money on something that we can do. Now, it needed to be done; I wasn't going to do it and my wife doens't have the energy. Well worth the money.

I changed the title because the previous one was obvious. I did a poor job of explaining it, but I meant time doing chores/tasks vs paying someone to do it.

I still think the answer is simple. Is the amount of time its going to take me to complete myself/with help worth more than the amount it would take to pay someone else to do it? Do I enjoy the chore matters too. How much is your time worth? $20/hour? $30, $50? etc. What else could you do with the time? So many questions to be weighed, but in the end, more times than not for me, its worth it to pay someone else to do bigger things like in your example.

Plus you don't risk back injury by carrying a couch in with an older guy (her dad). Yeah I would have it delivered all day if I were you. It's a complete hassle to have to do it yourself.

The real question is why are you telling him what you paid? If he asked, I’d lie and say it was free delivery.

Everyone has different ideas when it comes to that sort of stuff. I like to pay for convience. Some don’t.

How much value do you assign to not having to go to the chiropractor/doctor after you jack up your back grunting the couch around? $75 sounds like a steal to me.
