I never understood why they wanted cousins...still don’t. He is a .500 QB.
Love John Clayton. Especially his old ESPN commercial. Did he go into detail of how he came to the conclusion that it was "total discombobulation?".
The front office looked at how close they were in 2017 and felt like a top tier QB would take them over the top. They didn't think Case could perform on the big stage to get them to a SB.
Cousins was the best available free agent QB on the market so they paid for him. That decision was based upon many assumptions that didn't come true, two of which are: 1) the hodge-podge OL will work in 2018 like it did in 2017 to not be a glaring weakness and 2) the defense will allow so few points that if the offense is even average, they would win a lot of games.
Assumptions 1 and 2 have blown up in their face in a spectacular way. (Yes I know the defense has gotten better later in the season).
My biggest problem: they didn’t think Case could win the big game but what in the world made them think that Cousins could? I would have kept Case because they were good with him....and very close with him. They switched off him because they thought Cousins was better? I think that’s ridiculous.
Cousins has a much higher ceiling than Case. I was fine with the move but they also needed to address the O Line and never did.My biggest problem: they didn’t think Case could win the big game but what in the world made them think that Cousins could? I hear you, but I think Case would have been just as bad, if not worse, than Cousins with this OL. If they went with Case and it was going the way it currently is, the narrative would be completely flipped on the front office to "This team went cheap instead of opening the purse for a top tier QB. If only we had Cousins, we wouldn't be in this mess."
My guess is, the front office wanted to do all they could to put this team in the SB. They felt that Cousins got them closer to that goal than Case. They made a call and (so far) it hasn't worked out. Still time though.
The radio guys here in MSP made a great point yesterday that I think is spot on: Zimmer wants someone to run the offense well enough to give the team a chance to win with the defense he develops. I like Zimmer a lot and hope he stays regardless of how the rest of the season goes. However, Zimmer is effectively a DC who also makes the big decisions. He's not an offensive mind and doesn't pretend to be.
What I don't like is how he says things that make it sound like he's washing his hands of the offense. "Our offense needs to do a better job, etc" He's the head coach and he needs to lead and help fix problems, not just fire shots in his post games.

This is a big reason why it took him so long to finally get a shot at being a head coach. His blunt nature rubbed a lot of teams the wrong way in the interview process.
I said higher than Case. I didn't say he is going to be a top 5 QB in the league. Why do you think this? I don’t understand this thought pattern. He started for 3 years, played in 2 playoff games (lost both) and was a .500 QB. What did you see from him that said his ceiling was high?
Interesting. I didn't know that. The bluntness is a funny thing because what really matters is winning. Bellichick rubs plenty of people the wrong way. Saban seems like a huge a-hole. However, they win so it's excused. Act that way and lose, and you're labeled "too much of a jerk to work with." Act that way and win, and you're "tough but gets results."
It's just something I kind of recall hearing about when he was still a defensive coordinator. He made the rounds in interviews for several years before Minnesota finally took a chance.
What's really interesting about Belichick is that his personality helped get him run out of Cleveland, and before Mo Lewis took out Drew Bledsoe and started the Tom Brady era he wasn't winning much in New England either. Like you said, you can be as big an a-hole as you want to be as long as you win.
If Flip couldn't even get the plays called in time, at this point in the season, no wonder the Vikes moved on.
The Vikes D has just had too many key injuries on the line, LB, and DBs this year to repeat last year's performance. The O-line was bad last year, and with retirements and FA, they were worse this year. And, they drafted a DB who was injured all year instead of getting a stud O lineman. All formulas for a wild card team. Cousins is the least of their problems.
