Agreed, the 15-16 team was a poor coaching job. We should have been contending for a Big 12 title, not going 10-8, getting a gift wrapped trip to the Sweet 16 and then getting embarrassd by Virginia.

We had a new coach/system and so it took a little more time to gel.

Not only that but the “apparent” uncertainty of our HC played a big part in us not finding an additional grad transfer post which was needed for us to hit our peak.

Overall that team ended up doing as well as any Fred teams did, which was to finish 3-5 place in the B12 and Sweet 16.

I would give Prohm a B for his first year.

Second year was probably an A-/B+

This year has been up and down. I would probably say we'll finish between a C and a D (relative to experience, talent and how deep the B12 is) depending on how the next 5-6 weeks go.

It is strange how many people hate the coach that put Iowa State back in the National conversation. It is like they would rather blame him for the problems three years later rather than the actual coach.

Hate? What? Not taking sides with anyone on this board....but just because some fans are pointing out the coaching transition put us behind the 8-ball, doesn't mean they have to be accused of 'hating' the previous coach. Fred brought us back to relevancy and will FOREVER be appreciated for his talents in bringing us one of the most successful basketball eras here ever. The unbalanced classes is absolutely a fact. The failure to bring in high quality or even semi-high quality recruits in his first two recruiting cycles (especially the spring) is also a fact. He is building the program from stratch at this point but that isn't solely because of the unbalanced classes.

People don't want to hear this but the first year of Prohm's was average at best based on expectations. 10-8 in the conference and first round exit at the Big 12 tourney. They beat two double-digit seeds before getting ran off the floor by Virginia.

The second year was a great coaching job based upon the 12-6 conference record. The conference tournament was terrific but even if they had flamed out and lost in the first rounds of both tournaments that year would have been a tremendous success.

This year has been average (at best) based upon expectations. Next year will tell the story. If this team gets back to the NCAA tournament then he has righted the ship. If we miss the tournament due to unforeseen transfers, poor play, poor coaching, etc then I think we can look at the track record and say we have a very average Power 5 head coach.

Why, oh why, do people keep on forgetting that we didn't have Naz Long for most of that season, including all of the Big 12 season? You know, our best perimeter shooter, and a player good enough to have had a cup of coffee or two in the NBA? Do some people really not understand how much that limited us in the Big 12 and impeded any chance of us truly competing for a conference title? As it is, that team still beat Kansas at home as well as #1 Oklahoma.

As for the NCAA tournament and beating only double-digit seeds, well...here's the thing; when you are a #4 or #5 seed you are going to play a #13 or #12 seed in the first round, so you're stuck playing a double digit seed. Maybe next time we make the tournament we can petition the selection committee to give us a 1st round game against another single digit seed so that our fans can't whine about playing inferior competition.

And how about we give that Arkansas Little-Rock team a bit of respect? They came back from being down double digitis against Purdue in the 1st round. They were clearly very well coached by Chris Beard, as we can see by what he's done with Texas Tech in only his second year.

Do you honestly feel that we are such a "Blueblood" program that we can and should afford to look down our noses at a Sweet 16 appearance based on who we beat to get there? I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous and worthy of being mocked.

Last year I'll give him some credit, we got hot in February and March, mostly due to the fact he finally realized Bowie and Holden were overmatched and put Young in as a starter.

I'll give him some credit for his high school recruting also, but you have to remember Niang and Thomas were highly rated hs recruits that Fred pulled in also. Prohms transfers have been huge busts so far in a 3 year sample size.

I know when Morris graduated, point I'm trying to make is they both were veterans and upperclassmen by that point.

And yeah, losing Naz did hurt that year, I just think he was about the 6th or 7th most talented player on that team, we should have been able to absorb that better.
