Interesting. I thought they were picked last but I guess not. The general consensus was that it would be a rebuild year, somewhat like this one. Almost all believed we wouldn’t be a tourney team and really ended up being a 3 seed. Definitely not close to what many expected. They weren’t picked last. All of the high school recruiting he did to establish the program Fred did a great job here
So then you must give prohm all kinds of credit for Abdul, Monte, Matt, Naz, and Deonte getting professional paychecks then, too.

Yes, Prohm does deserve credit for that. He played a big part in helping those players earning professional paychecks and get to that next level. I’d also give McDermott due credit for helping guys like Justin Hamilton, Craig Brackins, and Mike Taylor earn professional paychecks as well.
Definitely not be ranked all year (mostly 9-19th all year) and be a 3 seed. That much was definitely surprising. They were expected to be a bubble team.
You forgot Wesley Johnson on your list.

What an outstanding story and coach he was. Hometown boy, stated at his jersey retirement he wanted the job. It was his dream job
I guess that’s what makes it so strange he and carol wanted out of their hometown so badly, he spent half of the off seasons he was here chasing other jobs. Makes no sense does it?
Actually it kinda does. It was his dream to coach in the NBA. I can’t say I blame him. It would be pretty awesome to coach some of the best basketball players in the world in hands down the best league in the world. Also, would probably be pretty neat to coach in a league that is followed by millions and millions of fans worldwide and to also be a part of a major brand like the Chicago Bulls. I guess I could see it really. What an outstanding story and coach he was. Hometown boy, stated at his jersey retirement he wanted the job. It was his dream job

I think the fishbowl wore him out. I can’t blame him for taking the Bulls job. His flirtation with Minnesota (Gophers) was the puzzling one.

Gotta appreciate a guy who gave us 5 great years and left Iowa State basketball in a far far better place than it was in when he started, right?
Of course it wasn’t. Why would he? Should I discuss my aspirations to work for a larger company in the future with my current bosses? You do realize the “dream to coach in the NBA” thing was never even uttered for 3 years he was here?
Maybe you don’t.

As far as you know at least. Never know if that would change if the right opportunity comes along for Prohm. Can’t imagine how many offers Hoiberg turned down in the 5 years he was in Ames. ADs were contacting him constantly, as they do with any good coach they want.Well thank goodness we have a coach here now that likes it here enough to reject contact from schools that would pay him more money.
Hard to really focus on the job you have when youre constantly trying to leave. Miss important parts of the responsibilities of your job description, leaves the place worse long term.

It is strange how many people hate the coach that put Iowa State back in the National conversation. It is like they would rather blame him for the problems three years later rather than the actual coach.
Guess Iowa State would have been better off to never hire Fred. After all according you he left the place worse long-term. Maybe we should have hired Billy Kennedy back in 2010. After all he had great success at Murray State which happens to be a top two job in the Ohio Valley. Maybe we could have the same success as Texas AM is having (one NCAA tournament appearance in five years).
It will still be Fred's fault in Year 4 and 5 of Prohm's tenure. Maybe by 2022 some fans will make Prohm take ownership.

So then you’re saying it was prohm’s program the last two years then too right. So he deserves all the credit for the sweet 16 and the big 12 tournament championship? Good that you agree there
If you understand that, then you should also understand that he now has to start from scratch because there is not one player left on this roster that was recruited by Fred.
So while he may not work out long term, there is no way we could possibly know that at this time because he has to build the program back essentially from scratch.
The unbalanced classes is absolutely a fact. The failure to bring in high quality or even semi-high quality recruits in his first two recruiting cycles (especially the spring) is also a fact. He is building the program from stratch at this point but that isn't solely because of the unbalanced classes.
People don't want to hear this but the first year of Prohm's was average at best based on expectations. 10-8 in the conference and first round exit at the Big 12 tourney. They beat two double-digit seeds before getting ran off the floor by Virginia.
The second year was a great coaching job based upon the 12-6 conference record. The conference tournament was terrific but even if they had flamed out and lost in the first rounds of both tournaments that year would have been a tremendous success.
This year has been average (at best) based upon expectations. Next year will tell the story. If this team gets back to the NCAA tournament then he has righted the ship. If we miss the tournament due to unforeseen transfers, poor play, poor coaching, etc then I think we can look at the track record and say we have a very average Power 5 head coach.
