MLB: ***2024 Minnesota Twins***

I meant the other Lopez (Orioles). The Miami trade hopefully is a wash.

One thing to note on the Lopez and Mahle trade, those were the front office trying to buy at the deadline. The Paddock trade was similar (certainly weren't selling for prospects). I think this front office has done pretty well on "selling" trades.

The Twins are very average at best. If they were a good team, they would have been swept by KC. Good teams take care of the dregs and move onward and upward.

So did the Reds with Mahle. The Gray trade is a slight plus depending on where the comp pick lands (as they traded a 1st rounder to get him and will get back probably a 2nd rounder).

Both of those picks are lottery tickets, so getting what they got out of Gray makes that one a big plus I'd say.

Depends on the return for Larnach or Wallner, but they just have so many LH corner OFs with limited upside. I'm not sure either Larnach or Wallner will pan out, although I'd rather hold onto Wallner.

With those 2, Kiriloff, plus Yunior Severino putting up monster numbers in AA, I think you can deal from depth. You also might need that spot for Brooks Lee, Royce Lewis or Austin Martin (if he bounces back). I think its a position of depth with a good chance that neither player pans out completely and you could be selling at their peak value.
Martin needs to be on ‘possibly’ trade list too. Don’t need another average infielder.
They’ll never do it, but Lee needs to be on the big league roster next year.

Well we haven't seen much return for the 'sale' of Pressley or Berrios. Escobar trade might end up being a positive depending upon how long Duran lasts (but 3rd base has been a weakness since Escobar left). Cruz trade was obviously positive, but Ryan right now is no better than a #3.

Lee will make his debut next year for sure. Could be this year. Might not be on the opening day roster, but barring injury, he will be on the big league roster.

Martin is not Rule V list, so they don't need to clear him out. If he can be a piece for a good buy trade, then great, but he's not really a sell guy right now. His value is low and they aren't at risk of losing him.

That fair on Pressley. At least they got some value out of Celestino and Alcala still has a chance if he gets healthy.

Berrios is still to be determined. Austin Martin is not the top prospect he was made out to be, but he's not a lost cause. Simeon Woods-Richardson is still super young.

Escobar trade was a huge win, unless you'd consider a Duran for Candelario trade right now makes sense.

And I don't know how you'd put a qualifier on the Cruz trade, thats just trying to find the negative in absolutely everything.

I agree Cruz trade was a win (and I stated as much) - although Ryan is not the 1-2 alot of people want/claim him to be. I totally disagree on Escobar being a huge win. Maybe in 4 yrs if Duran continues with how he is playing now, but we gave up an All-Star who was again an All-Star after he left (and a great teammate/leader). If Duran were to blow out his elbow/shoulder right now, I would not consider 1 1/3 seasons of a good closer for Escobar to be great by any means - I just think the jury is still out on that trade.

Keeping Escobar would have meant signing him to an extension, so there is a cost to that. And while he was an all star in 2021, he was only ever slightly above average as far as OPS+ goes.

As for the Twins at 3B, they were going into the trade thinking of moving Sano to 3B. While he was awful defensively, his 2019 offense dwarfed Escobars. Even compared to the Twins at 1B, Escobar wasn't that much better than CJ Cron.

2020 was kind of a wash with the Covid year. Escobar was absolutely awful and Josh Donaldson was rediculously good.

2021 was Escobar's All Star year. Josh Donaldson had a much higher OPS+.

2022 was really the first year the Twins didn't have a good 3B after Escobar left and the only year where you might say that the Twins would have been better off with Escobar, although not by that much.

Only problem with keeping around Martin is that they’ll have to evaluate his age. If he doesn’t develop soon, he’ll quickly become an ‘old’ prospect.

Agree, but just pointing out they don't have to give up on him yet. He's not a risk to be lost and not really taking up someone's spot in the minors.

The fact that the rotation is largely been nails all year but they the most impotent offense in the league is the most Twins thing ever.

Twins fans since the Santana trade: "Ok, but seriously, invest in a legitimate major league rotation".

Other than the Lopez swap, the Twins do nothing at the deadline. Only makes sense as there weren’t many right handed bat guys available that would have been difference makers for the Twins.

Best thing for Twins deadline seems to be the pale hose and the spiders selling - albeit not full on fire sales. Doesn't help with the Twins actually WINNING a post-season series however...

Prior to the Royals series I was starting to allow myself to get excited about baseball finally. I should have known better. That said, I hope they can really start to string winning streaks together.
