2023 Cyclone Volleyball

GCU has a fun environment. Their Friday night match was a ‘students only’ thing and I think that will help prepare the team.

Sidenote: Are we the only team in the country to start a libero 2 inches shorter than our starting OH? Haven’t ever really seen that before, but watching Brooke & Maya it obviously makes sense.
 
Is B1G+ an extra subscription or is it available for anyone with access to the Big 10 Network?
 
From what I can see it’s an extra subscription, just like ESPN+. $55 for a year of Big 10 volleyball or $80 for a year of Iowa sports. There doesn’t seem to be a free or inexpensive trial period.
 
Anyone planning on going to Coralville tomorrow?

This Iowa team had quite a bit of turnover from last season. Some talented pieces, but rough start to the year.

Should be able to handle the Hawks this year, but you never know what’s going to happen in this series.

Still kicking around the idea but the last time I went to IC game we lost for the first time since 1997. It was a S***SHOW of epic proportions.

Two years ago Iowa started the season 0-6 including loses against Coastal Carolina and Ball State before beating ISU in a sweep.

Yeah, that was definitely one of the most embarrassing performances of the CJL era. The 2021 team did have a road game at State College prior to the match in Coralville so that could not be used as any type of excuse (first road game). I do think the 5 set roadie at GCU this past weekend will help prep the team for tomorrow's road match.

I also believe the team had 3-4 starters out and they looked a little out of sorts... but that's part of the game.
 
Agreed with last weekends tournament helping with this road game. So good to have Maya back in the rotation. Too many capable hitters is a good problem to have.

Speaking of, does anyone actually know if Perry & Engelbrecht have been hurt at all or just gotten beat out at MB? Hopp and Pam have been so impressive.

I think we are going. Free for kids and just $10 for adults.

Eh, I don't think so regarding starters being out. That TOE team with Buzzerio (who starred for Pitt's Final 4 team last season) wasn't all that bad but still for ISU to lose in the fashion they did was not good:

Iowa is so down talent wise this should be a sweep. Barnes seems like a good guy but there is no Buzzerio Hannah Clayton Joslyn Boyer. It should be brutal and I hope it is.

I swear Engelbrecht popped in a bit last weekend when they dropped subs in. Didn't see Perry at all.

Alexis had 7 kills at .429 with 3 blocks and an ace last weekend against Long Island. All 4 Middles played against Missouri in the preseason as well.

Forgot Hopp played quite a bit against the hawks last year. So happy to see her thrive with another chance this year.

Annual sports video access rant...

I don't get CBS Sports so I couldn't watch Ashley with Phoenix last night. The ESPN+ subscription was renewed for the UNI Football game but it froze, broke down, or has horrible quality off the cell phone to TV, off the computer to TV, and could not find the app to do it directly on my TV via Sling.

The BIG Network is part of my SLING Sports pack and was happy until I checked and Nebraska VB is on not Iowa State vs. UoI. Our sports are available but it is a job to assure you sign up, pay up, and remember to cancel...barring glitches. I must have 2000 or more available "channels" if I include broadcast digital TV. But I watch very few shows.
 
SET 1: Iowa 26, Iowa State 24

Big runs by both teams in the early going, then it settled into a back-and-forth.

Gonzalez: 6 kills, 2 aces
Duckworth: 4 kills
Hopp: 3 kills

No blocks so far, though.
